Well, this post is going to fall somewhere between Suckage and Off-Topic, so I'm just going to post it here. :P

Anyway, I am now unofficially the unofficial techie guy for our library. Anyway, suffice to say, I am the only one with even an iota of computer software and hardware expertise, so I am now the IT department of one (along with a myriad of other tasks). Basically, what is happening is that my head boss is trusting my skills more and more in the area of technology (I think this is mainly due to the fact that if something is over my head, I will tell her up front), and she has begun to relegate more work for me in this area.

This is especially after some crap that a computer hardware guy has been pulling... and this is the part that really pisses me off. I mean, just because some people are completely ignorant about computers doesn't mean that you should take advantage of that. A few weeks ago, something that CPU would define as a PEBCAK occured. A computer was shut down improperly, and when the person tried to start it up again, the Windows Scandisk program came up. This person, not used to a computer without a mouse thought that the hard drive had failed and the computer had died, so she shut off the computer and called this tech guy to come up and fix it at $80 an hour. Of course, he did so with alacrity, but he decided that it took about 5 hours to "change out a hard drive" and reload the programs. Well, he MIGHT have done this, but he did not provide us with the "broken" hard drive that he switched out. Well, wouldn't you know it, this last week, someone happened to shut down the system improperly again, and again, this same scandisk error screen came up... except, this time I happened to be there. Good to know that hard drives come with a 2 week warranty now. :dodgy: Anyway, I told the lady that just because there was no mouse pointer didn't mean that the computer wasn't working. I pressed a few buttons, let scandisk do its thing, an wouldn't you know it? The computer worked. Absolutely amazing, I tell you!

Anyway, it's started to really piss me off when I see how much this library (which is struggling for funding and could use a lot more money for materials and programs) is having to pay out the a$$ because these freakin' vultures are trying to get their piece.

Oh, btw, you network admins might be hearing from me in the hardware forum in a while... (I have some questions to ask about who, why, and how much)...

Anyway, I am still pissed off... this ass clown made in 2 days what I make in a month for doing what I could have done in a day. :2far: I wonder how this guy can sleep at night.

Well, sooner or sooner I'll be outta this place! ;)

I'm actually planning on moving on, job or no by the end of this month. It is just that this is our community library, and I hate to see people taken advantage of. I'd just like to see a few more changes made before I go.

Oh, and btw, this tech guy forgot and left about $1,000 worth of software. :2far:

If the guy was dishonest enough to charge for something that should have cost nothing...he deserves to lose the software.

Welcome to our world. :wavey: I found that there are a whole bunch of dishonest people doing consulting work. The company I used to work for ended up doing all kinds of cleanup from a previous company that ripped off its customers.

i would call up the tech guy and see exactly what was done and to prove that he did it and also that it was nessesary. One easy way to see if he did switch harddrive and reload programs (not just copy which would not work if it was broken hdd) is to see if any saved data or even IE history is there... then he is busted..... if he is not able to prove that he did what he claims then maybe the libaray can provide you with a list of things "fixed" by the guy and even a lawsuit can break out... though that might be extreme. heh... scandisk, I think I know ppl that thing the same thing but I thought it was natural to wait for the bar to go to 100% even if you don't know about computers.. I guess that is why XP does have scandisk/chkdsk show up after an improper shutdown.

Well, the thing is, scandisk did have an error reading part of the hard drive, so it required a command to continue. I think (I didn't feel like taking the time then, but I'll check back on that computer in a few days) the hard drive isn't set up properly in the BIOS. Either way, for it to have the same error just two weeks after he allegedly fixed it... :hmm:

Well, half of it is burned copies. ;) But it is waiting at the front desk for him, whenever he feels like coming to pick it up. :hehehmm:

haha buirned copies... hmmmm i sense he is prolly some random guy that is not really part of a bigger company... unless the burn copies are the libaries own stock then that guys should not be putting them on... or is it just his own. hmm.... burn is a big no no if doing legit business.

Well, he is at least insured, if not legit. I, personally, could see burning copies of OS's, but that is only because I would leave the original at the office and used the burned copies when on the road. The thing that really makes me question it is--my head boss told me this--that he asked permission to burn a copy of the system recovery disk so he could take it to our other sites. :dodgy:
