View Full Version : A drunk guy broke into the brewery I work at

In the wee hours of the morning, some guy decides that he like a couple of more beers. So he tried to break into our brewery. He climbs the fence, and gets tangled up in the razor wire. So he struggles for a while and gets himself all torn up before he gets over. He was really bleeding. Remeber, alcohol prevents your blood from clotting. The security guard must have missed the whole thing, he was right in plain view of a camera.

So he goes in an open bay door in the back. We run some parts of the plant 24 hours a day during the summer. So several of the bay doors were open because we were loading trucks and unloading cartons and cans and stuff. There were a few people working in the plant, but not many.

So he wonders around on the bottling line for a while, leaving a trail of blood. Nobody sees him because we weren't running the bottline at the time.

Eventually, he finds his way upstairs to the can line, where there are people working. He scared the crap out of one poor lady who was running a packer. Some of the guys got him down on the floor in the maintenence shop, and our first aid people treated him.

They called an ambulance. When they got there, they called the cops. The guy had outstanding warrants.

A pretty crazy night. I got there this morning and had a look at the fence. The razor wire is all twisted and bent. All the blood was cleaned up before we started running again. Poor guy. I hope he managed to have a beer at some point.

Wouldn't you like to know! Well, I know what you're up to. I'm not telling until we get the razor wire fixed!

JK. We make Fosters, MGD and Asahi, and some other brands.

Cool deal. I drank a LOT of the Kokanee when I was in Vancouver. Hey... Do you get a weekley allowence of free beer? I know some people who work for Budweiser here in the states and they are alloted 2 free cases per week.

I only get 2 case a month cause I'm temporary. Permement gets 5 per month. There's also a lot of times we get parties and stuff.

Ouch man of all things to get tangled up in, razor wire is one of the worst! Lucky he didn't rip his eyeballs out of their sockets!

Actually, we had another potential Darwin candidate last year. The brewery is right beside a bridge. There was a guy who previously dated one of our mechanic's sister.

He would use the bridge as his way home, but because he lived kind of underneith it, he wouldn't want to walk all the way to the end. The bridge goes over land for a little bit. So once the bridge got overland, there was a tree. To save himself a bit of a walk, he would jump off the bridge onto the tree. Then he would climb down the tree.

One night, on the way home from the bar, he did this, but missed and broke his neck on a branch. His body got caught up in the tree, and he was suspended there like a ragdoll. Eventually, the next morning, we opened up some loading doors on the second floor, and saw him. So again, it was cops and ambulances, and they got him down. Pretty sad.

so, they're all the same beers then?
how can all of them be in the same breweries?
what...you make one brand.
then once the vats empty, you make the next one?

No, we only have one vat where the beer is made. Acutally, it's made in 3 vats. Then it gets stored in one of our 20something 100000 litre storage tanks for a few weeks to ferment. When its out of the "making" vats, then another brand is made. The vats are basically where we combine the materials. After fermenting it gets filtered and packaged. We can only package one brand on each line at a time also, so we do one brand for a few hours, then switch. We have 2 packaging lines, one for bottle and one for cans. They don't need to do the same brand as each other.

As for the ice rink, we do have a brewery in GM Place that we run, "Rickard's Brewhouse". GM Place is where the Vancouver Canucks play and the Vancouver Grizzlies used to play. So if you're there for a game, come up to the Brewhouse and have a cold one. You'll get a clear view of the vats, and there's usually someone there to answer questions.

You're Canadian? And you work in a brewery? Shame on you! Now go rent it...

wait...one brewery makes three different brands of beer?? First, I thought each brand has their own breweries. And second, if one place makes it, don't they taste the same? Also, if multiple places make the same beer, won't the taste be different from place to place?

Like I would know what beer tastes like anyway...I get sick from a bottle of hard lemonade...

hey! I'm asian! give me a break =)

1) We make far more then 3 brands. We make 21 brands. I just mentioned 3.
1b) Nope.
2) They don't taste the same because the stainless steel tanks are washed out between brands. We have a very complex piping system that keeps everything seperate. Some brands have specific ingredients, some share some of the same ingredients but have a differnt brewing process.
2b) We have 5 breweries in this country. They do taste very slightly different. It would take trained taste buds to pick it out. The same can be said for different batches. Each batch will taste just a little bit different. We have very exact specs and processes to ensure that the taste stays constant, but there is a little variance, both in taste and alcohol content. It is checked chemically and by a "taste panel" before it leaves the plant. And no, I'm not on the taste panel, and no, there's no room for you. :)

wait...so why do you change brands? Why not just brew the one that gives you the most money?

I find this incredibly fascinating =)

You can only make as much as people will buy. Beer is market driven. We would love to be able to sell one brand in one pack size. (We sell some brands in packs of 6, 8, 12, 15, 18, 24, and 30, plus kegs.)Its also better to use the plant to full capacity. That is, its better to make a little money on smaller brands than have the machinery sit idle.

what's the most profitable beer to make?

what's the least?

i6s1

I have no idea. I'm not really privy to that sort of info. I know we make less on "Licence" brands because that's someone else's brand, they just pay us to make it. With our own brands, we keep all the money.

Chances are if it's a higher price when you buy it, there's more margin for us.
