i just got done writing a long ass story about what actually happened, but i figured yall don't want to read thru all that crap.

long story short, a few friends of mine and i had to give a couple of DIRTY FREAKIN CROOKED mexican cops $200 for them to let us go on bogus moving violations they made up and pulled us over with, just because we were in a shiny new 4runner and they thought we were doctors.

WTF?!?!? i was the one driving, and when we first realized exactly what the hell was going on, oh man, i SOOO wished i had a crowbar handy... filthy bastards... :mad4:

that's all i have to say about that. i am never going back there... :mad4:

$200.00 is way better than time in a Mexican prison. Be polite pay them and stay the hell away. Bad things can happen down there. Not so bad in the cities, but my parents were in Cozumel and decided to go for a drive one night. They were in the middle of nowhere and crested a hill and found a dead guy in the road with army looking guys with automatic weapons. They left and did not do any other exploring.

This is why I was always told never to drive my car into Mexico. First off, your insurance isnt valid there. So unless you went and purchased Mexican insurance, you would have been frucked if you had gotten into any sort of accident. They impound your car and wont let you return to the US from what I hear. Second, corruption is rampant. A little while ago, they arrested/detained a large number of the Tijuana police force on charges of corruption, bribery, etc. Included in those detained was the chief of police, although he was later released and said not to be involved. However, he did not get his job back, so you gotta wonder what was going on there. Third, if you have US plates or look foreign, you are a walking target there for scams, rip offs, and other ill will.

So I would have to say, all in all, getting away with paying only $200 is probably good. As for not violating the law, well, if you ever looked at how Mexicans drive, if you follow the law you are probably breaking their rules. :D

The messed up thing about the corruption down south is that Mexico could be a cool tourism place again. They have beaches and the dollar is good. Why go to Hawaii or to Las Vegas when you could go down there for the weekend and get more for your dollar. The history and culture and the weather......

Filming movies down there sux too. Stuff always end up missing and you have bribe for this and that.

I havent been down there for like 8 years and doubt I'll be going any time soon. Don't like places where kidnapping is an accepted profession.

)I go to Mexico just about every chance I get (about once a year or so) I love it and hope that someday I can retire to Ixtapa or someplace similiar. All those trips and I've only come close to getting arrested once. Its a lot like going to New York or Los Angeles. If you know what you are doing you'll be fine. If you don't things can go to $hit fast. Be careful and stick with someone who knows whats going on. And for the love of God don't bring you car into TJ. Get a place to stay on the US side of the boarder and take a cab back and forth (kind of goes along with knowing the lay of the land ;) )

Viva la Mexico!

Yep cops in Mexico suck ass. When I was in high school I had to pay them off atleast 3 times, for various bullschitt reasons. But it was always known that when you went down there, that was something that you would have to be aware of. It sucks, but it's just the way things are.

I'm glad you made it out safely though.

I agree.

Don't take your car in there, esp if you have a hot one. You in there tryin to floss, and these people don't have anything and are desperate...just asking for trouble.

You shouldn't have a problem in the tourist areas, they'll leave you alone because they don't want to mess with the tourist biz. And just South of the Border...take someone who speaks spanish with you and just be low key.

If you go during the day, you can get some great deals on stuff if again you bring someone who speaks spanish and can barter well. My friend got some beautiful spanish tile for her condo at 1/2 the price per sq ft that she wouldve gotten it here. Her mistake was that she only took 1 truck and had to go 2 mi's per hour all the way back to L.A. :disa:

What part of Mexico were you at? Northern Mexico is the bigggest piece of crap in the world. Driving your car into Mexico is never a good idea though. We've done it once and just getting the little sticker to cross the border is a HASSLE. Whenever i'm in Mexico I only speak spanish to them and tell them i'm from Guadalajara. Makes everything easier.

When I went down to TJ a few years ago, we walked across, and took a taxi to some of the strip clubs, and then a few bars, after we were well on our way, the taxi driver decided that he was going to leave if we didn't give him an extra 100 after the 50 we paid him to stay with us all night, and whatever the price was. It sucked. But it got made up to us, because we got to watch him get hit on by a transvestite hooker in one of the bars he took us to. It was great, cept for the extra lost money. Oh well, live and learn.

it's not that bad. i've been there many times and nuttin happened. of course, i listened to reasoning. certain things you just don't do, you know? listen to the horror stories...figure out what happened...it does make sense if you pay attention...then don't repeat those mistakes.

sure, paying off cops sucks. but i've had worse happen stateside

yeah, i'ma just have to chalk it up to experience. i just didn't know that these types of things happen so often; i thought they were rare occurrences.

of course, it probably didn't help that it was 3am and there really wasn't anyone else around. as far as the car was concernced, i initially thought we were gonna be takin this old white minivan, but i still didn't suspect anything would happen on account of the 4runner. i mean, when the cop pulled us over he asked each one of us individually "where we worked" and thought that we were doctors or actors. he didn't believe us when we told him we didn't have $200 in cash with us.

whatever...
