Howdy,
Just curious how I can configure Windows 2000 to turn off the system rather than getting the "It is now safe to turn off your system" splash screen? Thanks.

This should help you: http://www.amptron.com/documents/WIN2K_ACPI.pdf

Thanks for the link. I was hoping it would be easier than starting over, live and learn.

I had a Dell PC which always powered down on its own after shutting down with previous versions of Windows. However, once I installed Windows XP on it this ceased to be the case and it would give the dreaded splash screen saying it was okay to turn off the computer.

I was able to fix this by editing the registry. Please oh please if you decide to mess with the registry make sure to back it up first. :)

Key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Value Name:

PowerdownAfterShutdown

Data Type:

REG_SZ (String Value)

Value Data:

"1"

The default value is "0". Change it to "1" as shown above. If the key is not present, you can add it.

I'm not exactly sure what this key is for, since on my Athlon system which does power down properly after shut down, the value is "0" and changing it to "1" has no effect. But it always helped the Dell. I recently wiped that machine and gave it to my parents with a fresh install of XP, and the same thing happened. The same registry change fixed it.

My computer's not a Dell, but I tried this anyhow. Instead of shutting down, my computer just rebooted ... again, and again, and again. :| The only way I COULD turn it off was to push the power button, but I felt bad because it was before Windows got to do its shutdown routine ...

I changed the value back to "0," and things are back to normal now. Any other suggestions for avoiding the inconvenient shutdown splash screen?

All I can suggest at this point is to check out this page (http://66.39.115.252/a/shtdwnxp.htm) and hope a solution lies therein.

As it turns out, my ASUS P2B-F mobo is the source of the problem. I'll tinker with it later this week.

Thanks again! :wavey:
