hey guys, I am bringing my car to school next year in Providence so I want to get a cell phone in case of emergencies. But I also want to use it when I get home in NYC. Does anyone know any deals and which company is good for east coast? Thanks!

Yay, Providence! That's where I go to school, it's the greatest city http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif Where are you headed? Anyway, I have CellularOne service and I absolutely love it. I got in on a great promotion that lets me, for $25 a month, have 150 anytime minutes and free nights and weekends for two years (which was perfect, because I'd only be in the area for two more years). Plus I got a kick-ass Nokia 5120 for only $20, though I've spent more than I care to admit on the faceplates. Anyway, I'm not sure of their current promotions, but they had good deals when I was there.

I don't know about the east coast, but in LA, if you can get MCI service long distance service on any cell phone and get low rates for long distance if your house number is also handled by MCI.

Well... Can't beat the deal up there, but well I dun think it is valid now. So what's the point?! I use Sprint. The cheapest plan for $25 and then add $10 for free nights and weekends. Or they have another plan that doesn't have roaming charge in whole east coast but I think you can't have the free nights thingy.
The best deal is to get it in Boston, ya save like 30 dollars. In New York the taxes on cells are quite high.
I see two roads.
There is spirit's nation one plan, which I think one of them are like 500 minute for 50 dollars or something, anywhere in the US. But I heard their service is lousy.
Or ya can go bell atlantic for 200 minute for 30 dollars. But personally, if ya just visiting NY for just awhile stick with the local plan.... It is cheap and more convient. There is free nite and weekend. When ya decide to go back to NY in a more permenent bases, just switch your home coverage.

Guess what? I go to school in Providence too. Unlike Ben Williams, I don't find Providence to be a particularly great city. Parking is a big problem, and car theft somewhat of a problem too. With regards to cell phones, I use Sprint PCS, and to be honest, it really does have pretty good service in both Boston and Providence. Their service is much more saturated in California, so there are a lot more calls dropped there. You can find good cell phone deals at Point.com. For the Providence zip code, you can probably use 02906.

Hey, you too? Whereabouts, Brown, J&W? Yeah, parking's a pain in the butt - I just get where I have to go early or park at a friend's usually. Is car theft really a big problem these days? One of my teacher's cars was stolen awhile back, but otherwise things have been pretty good.
