I sthere anyway to keep the damn clock accurate with XP. Their automated time sync sucks. My clock was reading 10:09 and it was actually 10:55.
The other day it read 1:20 and i decided to take a lunch. It turned out to be 4:00!!! I thought the day was going by extremely slow. I figured the clock would be on since the time sync was on.
It seems to only update when you tell it to or every 24 hours from the last update.
My timezone and everything are setup right, and when i resync it, it shows up right, but the system seems to loose timelike you wouldnt believe. I asked a few XP users that i know and they say that the time sync in XP blows. Can anyone here confirm this? Is there something better to use?
This is the same dell with the LCD flicker. I think i will try a fresh install of XP. a PS/2 mouse didnt fix the problem. My guess is a POS mobo or bad install of the OS.

Check the battery on the MB. Failure to keep the correct time often means the battery's going.

why do we have to always jump to conclusions and say well it must be microsoft or dell or xp. maybe its just a battery :)

Hahaha.... You went to lunch at 4:00... I am sorry that is just tooo funny.
I just checked my Time Sync thing;
The time has been successfully synchronized with time.windows.com on 8/14/2002 at 1:36 AM
Next syncronization: 8/21/2002 at 1:36AM
So it seems to sync once a week. How often if your computer turned off? If that is a new Dell I doubt the battery could be bad already. Make them replace the system. That just seems too odd.

the battery should not be dead. Its a almost new system (only a few months old. I think we got them in march) Based on the previous problems with this system(see my LCD thread) i think either the mobo is bad or the OS needs to be reinstalled.
The system is on 24/7. The clock should not lose time when the system is running.
I think i will call for a system replacement

Nope, sorry. I may be a mac user, but i am also a computer nerd just like the majority of the board. Otherwise i wouldnt be working in a management position for a IT department

They don't know sh@t... but always think that they do.
i know mst of my *****. There is too much in the computer world for one person to know it all, so i admit i dont know all, but i know a fair amount. I have been working with computers since the days of 286's. Beofre that i was on the good ol atarti 800 (the one that was a giant keyboard and components computer system)
I always look at myself as not knowing enough. I am always looking to learn more. That was one of the reasons i took a job with apple. I knew just enough to fix them, but i could always learn more.
There are some people on this board who like to say their solution is the best solution. I know i'm not always right. Thats a good thing in my mind. The only way to learn is to be shown that you have no clue on what you're talking about or you tried one solution, and that didnt work, so you need to re-evaluate the solution.
I know Mac's are not the best system for all. I also know many PC users will be happier on a mac, and many Mac users will be happier on a PC. I admit I use both systems daily. I know both systems well. I know more about PC's than i do macs. I dont want to see apple replace windows as the most widely used system.
I am a person who likes to argue my points. Not because i get a kick out of it, but because facts come out, people begin to wonder and learn. Not only do i gain knowledge, but hopefully the others invloved learn something new as well.

My friend (IntegraTypeR) had a problem like that too. She has a Dell and they had to replace her mobo a few times, the last time they did it the clock would always be wrong if left alone for a long time (power off) so after i think 5 swaps they finally just gave her a new laptop =) working great last I heard.

AMEN to that, DF!
i've seen batteries fail on the first day of turning on the system.
nothing is working just "because it is new".
