Forgiveness

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart.

It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days work" he said.

"Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there." said John.

Could I help you?" asked the man.

"Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbor, in fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river level and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I'll go him one better. See that pile of lumber curing by the barn? I want you to build me a fence - an 8-foot fence- so I won't need to see his place anymore. It'll cool him down, anyhow."

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation". Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."

The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day.
The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.
About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped.
There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge-a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work handrails and all-and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

"You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said and done." said the younger brother. The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand.

They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder.
"No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for you," said the older brother.

"I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, "but, I have many more bridges to build."

God won't ask how many times your deeds matched your words, but He'll ask how many times they didn't.

God won't ask why it took you so long to seek Salvation, but He'll lovingly take you to your mansion in Heaven.

I would like to think that i would be as forgiving in that situation, but it seems way too idealistic. But i can tell you this much, I would NEVER let anything get between my brother and i to even lead up to something like that (at least i pray not).

I don't think the term "brother" has to literally mean blood-relative, it could be talking about a friend or other person who's close to you. The person I'm currently "beefing" with, we have called each other "sister", but we're not related. I'm praying about that situation though.

I think that if we are bold enough (setting pride aside) to extend grace, miracles can happen in another persons heart...even if it doesn't happen right away.

Well in either case I wouldn't let anything get between us. I'm the type of person who has a lot of acquaintances and few close personal friends; it’s rare that I have issues with any of them. From what I’ve seen, females (the peaceful sex), almost always manage to find an enemy. It astounds me how quickly they can grow to despise each other, how long they can hold grudges, and how they can "act" around each other. Men are way too simple for that stuff; you got a problem with someone its pretty obvious. Of course this is way general but I’ve seen it over and over again.

Oh, I do agree what you say about us females. Although, I try to stay real and am who I am around whoever, I can have a mean streak and I can hold a grudge. But we do have our "good sides" too, don't forget. ;)

And yeah, men ARE simple. :D

I have a rather interesting question for you old testament people/anthropologists out there that I can't find in history...

Who lived in Israel/Canaan while the Jews were in Egypt/Desert for all those years? It couldnt have been abandoned, and it wasnt the Egyptians because they didnt colonize.

Okay. I get it now. The carpenter was Jesus right? ;)

Actually, it was a very nice story with a message that is timeless. It's also a parable that can be enjoyed by religious and non-religious alike if you view the characters in the literal sense.

Subject/Description was somewhat misleading, though. I thought we were going to have another raucus thread. :D

Why couldn't that happen in real life? The world isn't that cruel...yet.

I do not think all of the Jews were in Egypt at the time. Yes, some came over and were taken as slaves, but not all of them. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what happened. I wasn't there, I wouldn't know. :)

the offspring of the half-brother of Issac... Ishmael (sp?). Better known as Caananites (sp?) i believe.

Its been a while since i read it.

I'm sure the offspring of Essau (sp?) also lived there.

and yes, ALL THE JEWS lived in egypt for some time. Jacob and all his sons and their wives moved down there during a drought, and basically got stuck. They were the begenning of teh Jews.
