View Full Version : Do any of you get cold sores?
Do you find that stress sometimes brings them on? I've got a whopper of a cold sore, and it really sucks! I picked up some abreva ($14 for a tiny tube  ) Hopefully it will heal faster.

Yes, stress does bring them on. And also, not when your body is not getting the nutrients it needs.
I get them all the time when I'm going through "serious" drama. Whem my papa (grandfather)was in the hospital for stroke and then eventually died in 95' I got them all over my mouth, it was horrible. NOT what I needed at that time.
Now, my doctor prescribes me medication that I start taking once I feel that "tingle" on my lip and it works VERY well. Sometimes its still a sore, but it doesn't go through that nasty "oozing blister" stage and it dries up quickly. But you have to take like 6 a day. Better than nothing, though.

I go through "spells" whwn I get one after another. I tried everything under the Sun. I find that Zovirax, a prescription topical ointment helps. But the absolute best thing is the tongue scraper. That thing will wipe any bacteria off of your tongue. You can really see what's going on after you have had dairy products. Within minutes you will start feeling the tingling go away., and the days for healing will be reduced to just a few.

Hmm... cold sores? Or canker sores?
The red painful ones in the corners of your mouth? Or the REALLY painful little white ones on the interior of your mouth?
I get canker sores fairly often, the little white ones. They can make a guy seriously miserable for a couple of weeks at a time.
I've cut mine down pretty dramatically since I started using a toothpaste with no SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) in it, and started rinsing at least once daily with listerine. Stil get 'em, but not nearly as often.
I mean the ones on the outside of my lips, although I've had canker sores too. I usually only get those after I bite my cheek (yes, I'm dumb I know)

REALLY?? I'm going to try that.
I thought the little white ones had to do with dehydration.
I'm personnaly talking about the blisters you get on your lip.

Canker sores are not herpes...
However, cold sores are.

Just for the record...getting cold sores DOES NOT mean that you have genital herpes.
Thank you very much.

well duh
what Im saying, and what brainsmile is trying to say, is that...
cold sores are in fact caused by the herpes virus, also known as Oral herpes.

Fortunatly I've been able to avoid oral herpes/fever blisters/cold sores.
I've been saved twice. First was by my friend Locke, warned me about a hottie in Fredonia who was on the feild hockey team.
And most recently, a teller and myself (Im a net admin at a bank), started to hit it off. A coworker who was there with me, starts bragging about me back at the office. Phil turns to me..and says oh, you mean christine? I wouldnt go there...she had herpes (oral) and some other STD (that was genital).
Moral of the story...if you know about a hottie who has it...warn your friends

Stress, sun exposure, and fevers are the usual "triggers" for cold sores. I always get a HUUUUGE one every time I visit my folks, so stress is a definite trigger. :P
Abreva works better than Denavir, a similar cream that required a prescription and was ~$25 a pop. Doctors were touting Denavir left and right, but I didn't notice it helping. Abreva helps it heal faster, usually by a day or so. A couple of times, I applied Abreva early enough, and the cold sore never developed. Schweeeet. :D
During an outbreak, I also take 1500mg (3 x 500) of Lysine, an amino acid that promotes healthy mouth tissue. A recommended daily allowance hasn't been established by the FDA, but I figured that one tablet with every meal seemed reasonable. It's pretty cheap, but watch out, they're the size of horse pills!
A friend of mine takes an acyclovir/zovirax pill every night as her "prevention plan." She also says that Simply Essential (http://www.essential-nz.com/) works really well, but I haven't tried yet because it's kinda pricey.

As a response to Jujubees post AND purposely "ignoring" Napoleon's ignant post...
Yeah, Lysine does work really well, I used that when I didn't have medical insurance (abreva wasn't out then). But the aciclovir works wonderfully and I don't get them enough to take daily. Also, I would think that your body would form some sort of tolerance if it was taken daily (similar to taking too much of the same anti-biotic).
I think its selfish for someone with a venereal disease to not disclose thier problem. Although, I do feel sorry for them in general because now it must be a stigma for them that they will have with them for the rest of thier lives. A form of constant rejection.
Personally, if I'm KISSING someone (let alone having sex with someone), I am very sensitive to whether or not I have a cold sore or feel one coming on (and I personally feel it the second it happens...tingle). I don't want to hurt (even this way) the person I love or care about.

Herpes Simplex I (the oral kind) is present in 80% of the population. It lies dormant in most people, but some are more susceptible to it and get cold sores. Just because you don't sport a fat lip doesn't mean that you aren't carrying the virus, buddy boy.
Herpes is NOT transmissible unless it's active (and trust me, you can't miss it  ). Unless you were planning on getting hot and heavy with the "hottie" from work while she had a fat lip, you weren't "saved" from anything.

and im not carrying the virus...ive never had a cold sore

Like latingirl says, if I even feel a tingle on my lip, kissing -- let alone sex -- is out of the question.

Transmitted through contact with mucous membranes or small breaks in the skin, herpes, whether type 1 or 2, is usually marked by one or more of the following: red, painful sores on the lips, genitals or anal area; swollen lymph nodes; or flulike symptoms. But the virus can also lie dormant for a lifetime.
http://www.families-first.com/hb/hb16.htm :
Over fifty million Americans develop cold sores every year. In some people this virus lies dormant over a lifetime. Others have frequent outbreaks.
http://www.oxygen.com/experts/delilah/delilah_19960925.jhtml :
Once you have contracted the virus, it can remain dormant in your body for days, weeks, years, even forever.

you see, it's like this: if you insult someone, then it's ok because it doesn't cost you anything. if they show that you're wrong, you can just downplay it and pretend that you acknowledged it, and ignore the fact that you got nasty about stuff and it's supposed to go away.
