Father set to stand trial for murder of toddler

Associated Press

SALINAS -- A man who admitted to police on secretly taped video that he killed his 2-year-old son 14 years ago has been ordered to stand trial.
"I think I was possessed that night," Anthony Juarez said on a videotape played Friday during a preliminary hearing. "Why do you get angry with a child for nothing? You don't."

Juarez, 41, a poultry processing worker, is accused of fatally battering his son, Anthony Mercedes Juarez Jr., in 1988, when he was living in Salinas.

A Monterey County Superior Court Judge ruled Friday there's enough evidence to try him for murder.

When the boy died 14 years ago, the Monterey County Coroner's Division ruled he died from blunt-force trauma to the head as a result of a fall.

But in March, a relative's tip that the toddler was the victim of physical abuse led to an investigation that took Salinas police to northern Arkansas, where Juarez had moved years ago.

Police arrested Juarez in June and secretly recorded him admitting he had killed the boy out of frustration when the child wouldn't stop crying.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Terry Spitz said a judge will set a jury trial date for Juarez when he is arraigned Aug. 28.

If convicted, Juarez could face a maximum penalty of 25 years to life

That's just disturbing that it was able to be kept secret for 14 years. How does that happen?

Why should there be a trial since he has already admitted he killed his child?

This goes to show something is so wrong with our laws of today.

I like the word "if" convicted!! What would be the reason "if" he isn't convicted.
