Just wondering for the very few mac users here if they have been using it. I got it on Thursday and have been playing around with it on my ibook rev a. Quite a bit of improvements. But the thing I like most are spring-loaded folders are back! Hehe. Just wish I could be utilizing quartz extreme. . . maybe I should upgrade to a powerbook :D:

i have been using it on several systems at work, and on my firewire drive at home. All build 115, not 115a. (the difference was a readme file) Apple confirmed my ADC version has shipped. I expect to get it monday. I have backed up my system for a clean install when i get it.
The spring loaded folders are great. I like the right click/open with option. Thats one thing windows users had that mac didnt. The system is just so much more responsive. My system wont benefit from QE, but my sisters will. I have a webserver running X at work that will see a huge performance gain, but that wont get updated anytime soon.
I'm also glad to see classic is almost dead. Never like the classic mac OS. X is sooo much better

I got it on Friday and have been playing with it since then. I don't see much difference, though now I can connect to my PC and get files off of it.
iChat is pretty cool, but it's somewhat buggy. Also, you can't make groups so all your buddies appear on a giant list.
I'm not sure about any other feature, but in my opinion it's worth the $20 for the upgrade, but not $129.

My wife just got her complimentary copy from Apple today, so we'll probably be installing it tonight.
Anxious to give it a go, had some fun with it at MacWorld.

Oh yeah forgot to mention. Classic loads up WAAAAY faster, like twice as fast.

Don't use classic, so that's no bonus for me but it's good for those who need it. :)
We installed it last night (that had to be the longest OS "upgrade" I have ever witnessed) and it works great. It's now a whole lot easier to file share with my PCs, the new Sherlock features are pretty cool, although each time I did a search for pictures, it came up as finding no matches even though it then went on to show several results.
Haven't had much time with it yet.

all direct apple systems have included it for the past few weeks. I havent heard anything from any outside vendor.
I have a beta of 10.2.1 already. It improves quartz extreme to make it a bit more snappier and adds the open with option on a right click. The classic startup is also redesigned.
Boot time is somewhat faster in 10.2, but with most unix systems, boot time is still slow. Uptime is what matters though, and 10.2 has been holding strong for me.
the smb browsing works pretty good for me so far. I wish they would change the smb://systemname to \\systemname like windows uses, but i can live without it. I also wish the server could be mounted as an entirity, not each sharepoint.
I hear the remote desktop client from MS to connect to a windows box works extremely well in 10.2. Since I really have no need to run windows apps, I havent tried it.
As far as not being enough to justify the price, I totally disagree. You now get easier to use SMB file browsing, iApps (ichat now, isync and ical in the next month), a snappier OS, a more refined looking GUI, Quartz Extreme, Handwriting recognition, improved mail, improved address book, the new sherlock (havent tried image searches. movie searches works great), and spring loaded folders. There are many more, but to me those are the most appealing features. I also like the new preview app. I prefer it over acrobat reader for viewing pdf's.

ribitch can you explain smb browsing a bit? I'm not sure I have heard of this feature.
I should be getting my copy on Friday. Damn bookstore understocked and sold out in hours

wow, where do you go to school at that it sold out that fast? I know trhey sold abunch of copies at the apple stores, but i didnt think students would rush out for it.
SMB/CIFS is windows file sharing i.e. network neighborhood. In OS X 10.2, when you select go / connect to from the finder, a network browser window pops up. You can select differnt types of network shares including appleshare & windows shares. Each sysetm with a share will display. Select that machine will open the share, and possibly ask for authenication, just like windows. The share will then mount like any other disk on your desktop, and give you a nice little network drive icon. The same happens with ftp and appleshare volumes. The drive will then appear in all file browsers as a mounted disk.
To connect to a machine by name, type smb://machinename in the connect to window. This will allow you to directly connect to a shared system.
Another added feature in jaguar is CUPS print services. I have yet to play with this, so i really cant tell you much more on how it works.

For the SMB browsing, to me that means it can connect to PC computers. All you do is click Go->connect to server-> and it'll let you browse the network just like network neighborhood on Windows, or you can enter an IP address. Works great.
Ribitch, how do you use Quartz extreme? I really can't tell the difference, but I'm not sure it's on.

Oh you guys are talking about SAMBA right?
Ribitch, I work at UC San Diego. It's not so much the students but the Sys Admins here who bought it all up. UCSD is huge on Mac networks.

QE is enabled with your laptop. You will notice it while playing DVD and zooming while it plays as well as moving things on screen and various other things.
The difference is huge yet, but 10.2.1 will improve on it from early indications.
Play a dvd and zoom in and movie around the screen while its playing. The playback should be flawless and the image should be clear. The CPU usage should also be minimal when comparred to a non QE system. I found a link to it in action earlier, but i cant find it. I will post it soon.

I think that this is perhaps worth the price IF you are rich and can blow 3000 on a G4 with no sweat. As for me and my 500mhz G3, I think I'll wait for 10.2.5. BTW I also go to UCSD.Yeah Triton power!

Is there any anti-piracy protection in 10.2?
Nope. No serial, no registration, no activation.

I actually think this is a feature of Office X. I have an older copy of Office X and two of us were running it at the same time(before I got my own copy, eff off BSA) and it worked no problem. However a newer copy of Office X looks for duplicate serials across the network, similar to how Photoshop does.
You can always unplug your network cable when you are starting up ;)

Good idea on the reboot eSDee. I was getting pissed when i yanked the cord out and similar results would appear. does MS actually expect an average joe to spend $500 per computer or hell $500 at all. I could build a computer for that amount (pc of course). I'll have to check out openoffice or appleworks.
I just found this out and it's very interesting. While Office will freeze if i click on their apps, Word will launch if i click on a word doc. Although the dock won't work and there is noticeable slowdown afterwards, it is an improvement. i'll have to tinker some more.

If you go to the apple store, they sell a OS X family pack. For $70 more you can install Jaguar on up-to 5 computers. While 70 bucks extra seems reasonable to me it's strange that they would offer this when the software is no different then the regular OS X. Maybe Apple will slowly adopt some sort of serial protection.

Maybe Apple will slowly adopt some sort of serial protection. maybe they are just using the honor system. i mean there will almost always be a way to get around serials and authentications. how easy is it to get a copy of xp. ive got copies of every windows release i can remember. some i have multiple copies of and all of them work. on the other hand, some people will pay because its the right thing to do. and since its only 70 bucks more for 4 extra copies, its not as bad as say microsofts full price for every copy.

appple does use serials, but not on apps that most consumers would use. QT pro, webobjects, Final Cut, OS X server, Appleshare, and a few others all use serials.
I highly doubt they will adopt an OS serial or mandatory activation scheme like M$. apple touts its ease of use, and quite frankly a serial # or product activation is frustrating to many people.
the family pack is a great idea. For the price of XP pro's upgrade, you can get 5 FULL EDITION os installs. Many apple users have more than one mac in their house, so this is very appealing to them, and it allows them to easily increase their OS X install base.

Just wondering, but what kinds of systems you guys have OS X installed on? Cause I've just recently begun to use a Powerbook G3 that was given to me in the summer, and was wondering if the upgrade from 9.2 to X was worth the time and money. What especially concerns me is if there is a slowdown because of resource drain or anything....

I'm running on an ibook 600 rev a with the 100 MHz bus and 8 MB video card. Its running 10.2 VERY well, 10.1 was good but its just ever so zippier on 10.2. Also I originally had it with 128MB of ram and upgraded to 640. . . it made a whole worldly difference. Unlike some windows os's, there is almost no ram limitation in os x. I've heard some people using 10.2 on a g3 powerbook (pismo) and say it runs well. But if you're looking for just a speedy os experience 9.2 will be as fast as it gets for your system. I honestly wouldn't see any reason for you to switch to 10.2 unless if all of the programs you use are on 10.2 natively otherwise its not too much fun having to run 9.2 apps in classic. Also stuff up your thing with as much ram as you can.

Yeah, but usually they steal the innovations. Since they didn't on this one, I'll chalk it up to greed.

systems i use 10.2 on:
powermac g4 733 (work web/mysql server)
1 GB RAM Radeon 7500
runs great, no problems at all
PowerMac G3 350 128 MB RAM (work workstation) Rage 128 8 MB
runs x.2 ok. Not the fastest, but the machine is 5 years old. Its bearable
iMac 600 512 MB ram Rage 128 16MB
my home system. Not a G4, but I bought it for half its retail price. Run 10.2 very well. Runs much faster than 10.1
iBook 600 256 MB 8MB video
My fiances laptop. Did an upgrade instead of full format. Needs to be formated to get best performance. Will be formated soon. Slightly snappier than 10.1
iBook 700 256 MB 16 MB radeon mobility
My sisters iBook. It was an upgrade as well. I plan on formatting it this weekend because the performance is being crippled by the upgrade.
A powerbook G3 runs 10.2 somewhat decent. The more ram the better. Unlike 9.x a single app isnt limited to 999 MB of ram any more. If you dont plan on buying a new system in the near future, i would load the system up with as much ram as you can afford.
I personally think you should run the system as a dual boot system until all the apps you need are made available for X. This will allow you to run your apps in classic mode as well as just 9 or just X.

I'm using it on a G3 pismo and it works fine. I do need to get more RAM though, I have it at 128mb and that is a little slow for my taste. I was able to log into our compnay VPN last night, but wasn't able to browse the network. As soon as I figure that out, I'll be using it even more.
