What MP3 player takes up the LEAST system resources and is free. It also should take up very little screen space. I like how winamp does that thin bar and can be in the system tray insead of the task bar.

Sorry guys, WinAmp (no matter how much you want to believe it) is not gentle on resources. Even version 2.8x uses more CPU cycles than is necessary for minimal MP3 playback. I won't even begin to talk about version 3.x. Hah! What a joke!

A few years ago, I found STP (http://www.webattack.com/get/stpmp3.shtml), which stands for SysTrayPlay. Basically, this player resides in the system tray and all it does is play MP3s. Like the description on that page says, STP takes up minimal space and processor time. In its unzipped form, the entire program folder consumes only 326K of disk space. Sure, there are no visualizations or an integrated web browser, but who really needs all of that stuff when all you want to do is listen to some music? :)
