If they're both already on your network, the easiest way to do it is to map a drive on the 98 machine to a share on XP.
By default, every physical drive in XP is shared in a hidden administrative share. The administrator ID can connect to those shares, so:
In 98, go to file explorer & choose Tools.. Map Network Drive
Pick whatever drive letter you want, and for the path enter \\machinename\X$. Replace X with whatever physical drive you want to connect to on XP, and make sure to include the $ (which denotes a hidden share).
When you try to connect, it should pop up a log on box to authenticate you - enter the XP machine's administrative ID and password, and it should connect the drive.

if you're really paranoid (and if this is a one time thing), just unplug the internet from the router while you transfer your files... they havent found a way to hack a broken connection yet ;)
