i just got this on an unattended computer. what the hell? has anyone else been getting these. no its not microsoft messenger, its windows messenger service

That sucks. I wonder which advertising company thinks that ad campaign will work out for them...
i'm just wondering who would want a messenger integrated into windows? :confused:
i mean, i am comfortable with using broadcast messages in linux and stuff like that. but you gotta let the other person have an account on your box for that.
windows doing this is...just weird to me :shrug:

yea ive gotten that too before as well... damn spammers... i called the guy who was the talk to guy at the site the spammers gave me and he told me he had no idea of that ever occuring... arse bag

yeah there's been a slew of net-send spammers lately, good thing I'm behind a router. This only occurs to users running win NT/2K/XP and fortunately there is a way to disable the messenger service... I just don't remember how. So go forth and google guys.

windows doing this is...just weird to me :shrug: i know this was a part of nt4, and actually goes back to windows 3.x or earlier, though not as a service. the real purpose is to send a notice over the network for things like server down alerts. its not intended as a instant messenger type service.

If you have a firewall, you can block TCP and UDP ports 137-139. That'll keep those buggers away. :)

when i was in high school, we were running a 3.1/novell network, and i managed to send a message to EVERY computer on the network (not just high school, but also the junior high, elementary schools, administration building, etc) that said "bastard"
uh, yeah, i didn't know very much about computers back then :2far:
(fortunately, i narrowly missed getting caught by the principal :heh: )

That would be an excellent start.
If you're getting these kinds of pop up messages, you might want to do a little cleanup, because I'd bet you've got some pretty serious security problems with your pc/network.
If they can send you Messenger dialogues, you're wide open enough for them to cause some real harm too, if they (or someone even less ethical than a spammer) wanted to.

actually it's not that hard to do, I've been bugging hang10 forever with random messages. All you need to know is their IP address.
Go to command prompt, type net send xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(ip) yourmessagehere.

But if it gets through, that means you have ports open to internet traffic that didn't originate from your pc. That can be a dangerous thing.
A good firewall or a secure system would have ports closed, and wouldn't accept the message.
Getting the messages isn't of itself a bad thing, but it might mean you're exposed to other attacks on other ports as well.
just something to be aware of.

the one that happened to me only happened on a computer without any firewall. we dont have a hardware firewall and my computer is running zonealarm and i havent had any problems.

Can you just disable it by using the Windows XP Pro firewall that comes w/ the OS?
i know for XP... all you need to do is:
Start---> run ---> type msconfig ---> go into services tab---> look for messenger ----> uncheck it.
voila.. problem solved.......i think :shifty:
