View Full Version : networking question

I have to hook up 5 computers to one cable modem. I have a SMC wireless router with 3 wired connections and my laptop runs wirelessly off of it. (SMCWABR7004 or something) I also have an 8 port hub. My question is can i run the hub off of one of the router hook ups so that I dont have to sacrifice as much bandwith. My real motive is to keep my laptop wireless and be able to wire the rest of the four computers. Any tips or advice is appreciated, the less drilling I do in this house the better chance of me seeing any of my security deposit.

a hub will repeat all transmission to all ports, so any info transmitted across your hub will make it to the router, thus causing some congestion. Since your network is small, you wont notice it.
A switch will keep that info off of the router, causing less congestion on your router.
You can run a hub and a WiFi Access point off the same router without any problems
You will need either a crossover cable b/w hub and router OR an uplink port on your hub. (With the Uplink switch turned to on, if you have one.)

if one cable don't work try the other one. ;)
