Networking help

Ok I feel like a moron I can’t get this Win 98 PC to connect to my shared HP laser printer on my XP PC in my office at work.

The PC’s are in the same work group, on the same LAN.

The Win 98 Pc can see the server and 1 other 98 machine on the network (we have like 4 win 98pc’s and 40 win Xp Pc’s all in the same work group on our lan and our lan is connected to a HUGE WAN

But it (98 pc I want to print from) cant see my XP and my XP Pc cant see any of the 98 Pc’s on the network, but my Xp PC can see all the other PC’s on the LAN that are running Xp including the 2 WinNT4 servers.

Another weird thing is that some of the other 98 Pc’s on the network can see all the PC’s the 98 and Xp Pc’s. Any suggestions I am at a loss. Oh yea the ip’s are supplied by a DHCP server and expire hourly like 50 IP’s available.

Also the PC’s have the File and Print sharing services turned on.

Any ideas I am at a loss and need help!!!

Just a quick thought. Have you installed NetBUI on the XP machine? It's not installed by default and is hidden away in a folder on the XP cd. (If you need the exact path just let me know and I will dig it up for you)

I never can get Win 9X to talk to XP properly without installing it on the XP box.

I didnt have NetBUI installed on my Xp box.... u where right about having to dig to get to it. I still cant see any of the win 98 box's on the network from my PC. any ideas how i can view the 98 box's from a XP box?

Do you have the NWlink IPX/SPX/Netbios Compatible Transport Protocol set up on the XP box?

:stupid: I think WinXp wants to use this protocol to network with the 98's, rather than Netbeui. You could also use the XP box to create a "network install disk" that will basically put the data you need to network with the PC's on a floppy. I haven't done this personally but I have heard from a few that it works.
