California Gets tough on Jesus (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=856&ncid=856&e=4&u=/nm/20020910/od_uk_nm/oukoe_rights_prayer)
umm... duh... e-gads... some people...
on a side note: I noticed it was a little slow, so 'News' of a Nija-variety is in order as far as I'm concerned :)

Good, I hate how "God" is on money, that is one reason I try not to have cash!

I only read the first section so far.
That's okay...they can all just make it a point to gather outside the facility right before the meeting and pray (or the sidewalk since that's public property).
Then they can "invoke" the name of Jesus Christ all they want to. There's no time nor distance in prayer.
Wow, that Name must be pretty powerful if people are so shaken up about it to go through all this to get it removed.
edit: I don't want to start anything

man, this story is just f'd up since this is how it started:
The suit was brought by two men who were in attendance that night -- including Jewish Defence League head Irv Rubin, who has since been jailed on charges of plotting to bomb a mosque and a congressman's office.
anyways, I don't see this as a big issue. There should be a seperation between church and state. As latingirl said, they can pray before hand if they wish to do so.

I don't think so. I think they just got riled up cause they thought it was favoritism or some crap like that.

It's amazing how many Jewish people use Jesus' name in vain, even though they claim they don't believe in him.

Heh, if they started off with a prayer to Zeus, you can bet there would be a huge stink.

Most non-germanic languages use the word zeus as the basis of the word for God.
Zeus
Deus- Italian
Dios- Spanish
Tues- Scandinavian (hence tuesday)
The list could go on. Nothing amazing, just pointing out 'zeus' is a word now, not a person.
i don't get what the big deal is. when politicians pray, there are a couple of things that are implied:
the endorsement of the church by the state
the endorsement of the state (or the politicians) by the church and God.
now, personally i wouldn't care if there was just the one available religion and we all followed it. but since that's not the case, i'm wondering how it got this far.
remember, just because things have "always been" a certain way doesn't make them right. once you get comfortable to the point that you don't question things like this, no improvements can be made.

Jesus has more right to be in government than half the politicians.

"Jesus complained (in the Bible) about people praying in public when its really meant to be a private activity," he said. "I believe, as Jesus said, that politicians do this because they are hypocrites and they want to create the impression that what they are doing is infallible."
Hoooo boy!! Truer words have never been spoken!

I'm not sure who originally quoted that. But if they can tell me the verse. When I have time, I'm going to give my point of view on why that quote really isn't in context here.
Sometimes we quote from the bible (or anything else for that matter...the media is notorious for this), but we don't take into consideration context of the text AND what the author or the person we are quoting is about for the most part.
Many times we hear only what we WANT to hear instead of investigating further to find out what its REALLY all about.

Latingirl - from the "Sermon on the Mount" - Matthew 6:1-6
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly
Not bad for a heathen, eh? ;)
