ok, well, i gotta axe...
if you're "the real dopey," then why do you have "the real" on your name? it seems that "the real" dopey would just be dopey.
it's kinda like when you see something called "the original pancake house" or something...you gotta wonder if it wouldn't just be called "the pancake house." i mean, why would you append something to your name if you are indeed "the original"?
anyhow, that. i'm sure "the real mojo" may have something to add here, as well as "the real apex" and "the real GAM". perhaps "the real yossarian" or someone else will join in :hihi:

Unfortunately last night DoPeY decided to be insensitive towards 9/11 and disrespectful towards those who wish to observe this event. This was just the latest immature behaviour in trying to ruin it for others here. Hopefully this cooling off period will allow an examination and change in attitude to occur.

That could have been one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. I now know where the name comes from. Enjoy the time-out.

Not caring or disagreeing is one thing...being completely disrespectful to it is completely unacceptable behaviour.
It's the equivalent of someone pissing and defacating on your family members' graves.

will the REAL dopey, please stand up, please stand up?
:P
but seriously, i'm sorta getting annoyed by all the "what were you doing last year" threads. Not the G/A thread necessarily, but the ones on EVERY other freakin forum i've been to. BMW forum, SUPRA forum, SCCA forum, GA, etc... everywhere i go its the same question, and honestly, i dont understand what "where i was" has to do with what happened. I'm confuzzled to say the least.
oh well, i've nothing against people remembering the tragedy or the dead. I realize this is a 1year mile marker, and i'm sure it'll be the same for ht enext five years, and then the 10year etc. I might even burn a candle or something, but thats about it for me. Maybe if someone i knew was more directly affected by what happened i would be a bit more involved in the day.
personally, i'll remember this day as the day the government used to take away even more of our freedoms, in a rather large manner. :( What a sad day, in more than one sense.

Help me out Nano, What freedoms have you lost??? What has the government taken from you???
Have there been inconveniences created since September 11? Sure, but I'll be happy to remove my belt and shoes at the airport for the next 50 years -- and I travel often -- to increase the likelihood of my safety. You can look in my car each time I cross the Hudson River if that will help prevent some looney from blowing up a bridge or tunnel.
Have people been detained? Yes, but you know what, in times of war (and we are at war, folks) sometimes drastic measures need to be taken. At least we've evolved...60 years ago people of Japanese heritage were sent to interment camps. Some Germans and Italians were removed from the country.
Sorry to ramble but back to my original question: What freedoms have you lost since last Semptember 11th?

Those seem to be some huge liberties lost to me. Sure, taking off shoes for security is one thing. That’s not really a huge inconvenience. That’s security and it will probably go away in a few years.

hate to break it to some of you guys, but we are the land of the free, but that doesnt mean the government will not do what it HAS to do to protect each and everyone of us.
If they need to monitor the net or whatever, fine let them. As long as I can make it home at the end of the day safe and sound then I will be more than willing to compromise.
we have men and women risking their lives to portect us, and yet we still bitch about how bad the goverment is making it for us. Look at what they are going through and their friends and family are going through.
How have things changed since 9/11/01? We have to go through increased security at large gatherings of people and at all airports. Big fricking deal. Its worth it. If you dont like it, you are free to leave. Plain and simple. Canada has plenty of open land, and most of the country speaks english. Mexico is nice and warm. Australia has some cool accents, england and most of europe is pretty cool. Once again, if you dont like the way things are in our country, you can do something about it. Whether you move to a different country or try to get active in the political process, you can do something.

I have no problem with the increased security at airports and large gatherings, although articles like this one (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/09/03/eveningnews/main520612.shtml) and this one (http://www.iht.com/articles/69774.html) show just how effective such security has actually been. Guess they are too busy making sure you don't have a pair of nail clippers to notice that pepper spray or that lead lined bag with a bomb in it.
But when rights like due process are eliminated, then I start to worry. The precedents being set are very disturbing to me, are they not to you? If people--yes even American citizens--can be held indefinitely with no charges, can be denied counsel, and can charge people and jail them with no sign of a trial in sight, then something is wrong. How do these things protect me? They certainly don't protect the accused. Once the accused are in custody, why should they be anything other than innocent until proven guilty? Isn't that what we love about our country? Isn't that why we are here?
If the powers the justice department has essentially granted itself can be used in the "war against terrorism", then who is to say that they won't be used for other things down the road. After all, a murder or rape of a single person is pretty evil too, so lets round up all of the people we think are murderers and throw them in a cell and then forget about them. It's for our protection!
And whatever you do, don't accuse me of not loving my country. I do love my country and I will fight to protect the freedoms and rights that the Constitution have given us all rather than see them get trampled in the name of my supposed security.

Sure you can leave. Better yet, and much more American, you can vote for people who don't support some things the Patriot act calls for.
You guys keep mentioning airports - missing that the Patriot act is about a hell of alot more than airports.
I suspect some of you who support the patriot act also own guns. Wouldnt' take much to say, restrict guns, or banning them, in the name of homeland security.
I dunno that the patriot act goes to far - I suspect it does, but history shows we tend to go back and forth on these things. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be ever vigilent of our government - which is our duty - just because we are scared, and at war. Nor does disagreeing with with sort of thing mean you should up and leave the country.

personally, i dont like guns, have no use for a gun, and probably never will have a use for a gun. I do not support the NRA, and would love to see guns banned all together, but that would never happen for many reasons.

Why?
I personally don't own a gun but I really treasure my option to do so. Why don't you at least like having the option?

I have a gun, it's a winchester 12 gauge that I got as a gift from my brothers (we used to hunt together-ok well they would hunt and I would tag along, but I would be in the woods none the less every opening day of deer season)..I'll blow the belly off of anyone who DARES to mess with me or mine if it comes down to it..and if taking off my shoes in an airport, means 300 people will be arriving safely to destinations unknown, then far be it from me to criticize..

I understand the Patriot Act and probably could be considered an expert as to how it relates to funds transfers and "following the money trail." That being said, I don't see the slippery slope some many are alluding to.
I've read articles of people being detained without due process but I have more faith in the system than to believe these powers will be abused. Call me naive. I'll let you know if and when any of my rights are abridged. Oh, by the way, I don't own a gun...never even fired one.
