Need to convert my CDs to MP3CDs.

I used to use Audiocatalyst, but the prog I use is 3 years old and doesn't allow me to choose mp3 codecs.

1. So, what is the best program to rip CDs?

and

2. What is your favorite MP3 codec to rip CDs with?

i use exact audio copy to rip and razorlame to encode it using the --r3mix switch. i would suggest using any lame frontend which accepts the r3mix setting, but i think they are all pretty much the same

read more info at R3MIX (http://www.r3mix.net)

EAC's freedb.org can only find about 70% of my CDs.

Is there any way to force it to use other CDDB databases?

I've had good luck with the open source CDex (http://www.cdex.n3.net/).

Is there any way to force it to use other CDDB databases? i think you can manually enter another DB address.

bring down the EAC menu, click freedb/database options, and enter the DB address. if that doesnt work, use a windows CD player which can access the CDDB to get the disc info and under the Database menu, Get CD Information from -> CDPLAYER.INI

So I've extracted about 30 of my CDs so far, with "--r3mix" (192 VBR). One thing that I noticed is how Windows Media player reports the bitrate very high; 450 is not uncommon. Is that normal, or due to WMP9's betaness?

Is that normal, or due to WMP9's betaness? most players tend to show only the bitrate of the first frame or a snapshot of the file. since its a vbr mp3, wmp will only show that. most dont show that its a vbr file. if you play it in winamp, the bitrate constantly changes as the file is played.

one more vote for cdex! I was just "given" a huge book of awesome cds and i'm ripping them all (Have done about 30 so far) and burning them on a DVD. Only thing with CDex, it comes with the bitrate set to 128 default. Minor complaint, but awesome and easy to use software, with cddb queries.

VBR is awful. Use EAC and the LAME mp3 encoder. 192 CBR and whatver preset the genre is.

Wmp doesn't read the Xing VBR frame correctly. There are two ways of finding the correct bitrate for a vbr mp3 file.
1. Read all the frames and average the bitrate
2. Read the Xing VBR header which is the first frame of the mp3 file. This has to be supported by both the encoder and decoder.

i use musicmatch with MP3 pro encoded at 96kbps. For indie rock and experimental music it does the job!

MP3 PRO at 160kbps? I thought that to go greater than 96kbps with the MP3pro and musicmatch you had to use VBR.

They call 96kbps "CD Transparency"
