I've been to 6 of them, including "Stand in the Gap" in D.C. in 1997. This year I wasn't able to go, but I was able to watch the webcast. Go to the PK website and you can either watch a live webcast, or a replay of a past conference.

What does your dad getting robbed and the Promise Keepers have in common? Granted, your father's car was burglarized while attending the PK event. This could've happened anywhere. Not to knock your father or anything, but why did he have $7000 worth of clothing in his van? I try not to leave anything of value in my car because you never know when some scmuck may break into it or take it.

nah well the idea was that the promise keeper people running the organization would allow something like this to occur... i mean common they busted in the window... no security no nothing... upsetting to say the least and the reason the stuff was in there was that it was for 3 days and the PK had registered hotels for my dad and his friends and this was the first night so they werent given their place to stay yet till after the first meeting... so all the stuff was still in the van...

I thought Promise Keepers had something to do with celibacy? Can you be one even after you're "used goods"? ;)

Does everywhere you go to have security? Putting the blame on Promise Keepers is well humorous.

Quite the contrary, the bible actually admonishes women to give it up whenever her husband wants it (and vice-versa)...

1 Corinthians 6:12
"Let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to prayer and fasting; and come together again so that satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control."

So any woman who doesn't isn't really following biblical teaching (but there are some VALID reasons why a woman wouldn't want to including incest, molestation, rape, abuse, a husband who has bad grooming/bathing habits, etc.).

And Nija is right...PK essentially DOES mean playa killer. Well, actually playa transformer ("Men transformed worldwide" is thier motto).

I think it's awesome. As a single christian woman, I certainly back up organizations or even any individual who are committed to helping MEN become everything that God has called them to be. To #1 honor God and #2 because that's what I want in MY life....one of His sons.

He needs to be a good person who's receptive to such ideals in the first place (like kb0wwp ;)).

Oh, of course. But I think the conferences can be beneficial because they are positive and when you listen to something that is edifying to your soul, it at least plants the seeds of change...even if change isn't yet apparent from the outside.

If nothing else, it gives you something to think about and then you make your choice whether or not you are going to abide by what is said or just ignore it.

I'd actually like to hear some testimonies about this (not just promisekeepers but growth as a man or as a christian man), if anyone has any or cares to share. :)

Like the Promise Keepers have any control over the criminals.

"Attention all criminals! We're the Promise Keepers. Don't commit any crimes! That is all!"

i third the motion that jase is missed.

i haven't seen him since returning from cali.

btw, from what i've seen of promise keepers, it seems to me that they push more of a patriarchal social order than i'm comfortable with, but that's just my opinion

I'm assuming you haven't been to a PK conference. If you went to one, you'd say "Hey, where's all the pushing of the patriarchal social order?"

The problem is that PK conferences are basically a bunch of different speakers. And when one of those speakers says something controvercial on (or off) the PK stage, the media grabs onto that and reports it as if it is part of the PK "platform".

Yes, a major theme running through PK is that the husband should be the spiritual leader of their homes. Believe me, being the spiritual leader is not about "power", it's about servanthood. It's about striving to serve the spiritual and emotional needs of your wife. In Ephesians 5:25, it says "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church". How did Christ love us? By exercizing his authority over us and bossing us around? No! He died for us. If Christ is willing to die for us, maybe we could show our wives how much we love them by picking up our underwear, or turning off the football game to spend some time with her.

Another common accusation against PK is that they're a "political" organization. That really boiled over when PK had 1.2 million men in Washington D.C. in 1997. Patricia Ireland of NOW was on every talkshow telling us how evil PK was and all about their "political agenda".

Well, PK has been around for 10 years now. When will the "political" veil be lifted? When will the PK politics be revealed? I find it pretty amazing that PK had the largest gathering ever in Washington D.C., and did not allow even ONE politician to speak. No political figure has ever spoken at a PK event.

i guess i'm guilty in this case of listening to other people who have attended promise keepers events and assuming that they are accurately reflecting the ideals of the organization when they speak.

i totally agree with your definition of servanthood as leadership. apparently this was a bit too much of a logical distinction for the people i knew who went to the conference, because they seemed to interpret it in a markedly different way

heh...i've heard of stories where "femi-nazis" dressed up like men to attend these conferences to try and bring up some dirt about these men-only gatherings. i think they left frustrated.

At "Stand in the Gap" in Washington, about a dozen women took off their shirts and walked bare-chested through the crowd. I think they were kind of miffed that they didn't cause a commotion. Most of the men just ignored them.

Two years ago in Minneapolis, I worked as a volunteer. When they served the box lunches, we were told to take enough lunches outside to feed all of the police working security, and enough to feed ALL of the protesters. Most of them took the food and said thanks, but some turned and walked away.

That is truly, truly sad because they SPELL IT OUT very slowly and clearly there, word for word, and leave nothing about servant leadership to interpretation. There is no logical distinction, there is only hearing and not hearing.

As far as the music is concerned, just like with what's out there mainstream...it depends on what you like. There's country, alternative, rap, r&b (gospel), choirs, jazz...just about any genre you can think of in christian music. It's the lyrics that are different.

And just like what's out there in mainstream, some of it is cheesy and some of it is da bomb.

As far as the conference...if you go in there with an attitude that you probably won't get anything out of it or with a "mocking" attitude, you probably won't get anything out of it. But I think that many times people go in there with that same attitude and come out with a new perspective.

Plus, when you truly experience the presence of God...it does change you. You just have to determine whether or not it will be a lasting change after you leave or will you go back to life as usual? You always have a choice.

I would say the average attendee's age would be around 30. Yes, there's lots of great music. PK often gets in trouble with OLD BORING Christians because they play "rock" music. The music is usually loud and up-tempo. However, it's probably pretty tame by most teenager's standards.
