I have a newly setup XP system. The screen on the system I am working on right now is partially color and partially B&W. The icons appear in color, but move the mouse over it and it turns B&W, then do it in reverse and it returns to color. The screenshot will appear in color on a problemfree machine. I connect the monitor to a different computer and it works fine. Same computer with win98 and it works fine as well. Problems started after installing XP SP1.

PII 333
192 MB PC133
Viper 330 Video Card (RIVA 128)

NVidia doesnt distribute any drivers for XP for the video card. reinstalling the drivers dont do anything either.

Any clues?

i am trying to work out any hardware/software incompatibilities to do an office wide XP deployment. Thanks

Does this happen at every resolution?

Have you tried adjusting the refresh rate and display?

i can get 256 colors at every resolution. everything over 256 colors wont work no matter what resolution and refresh rate.

with 16 bit color the b&w is readable, but 32 bit looks like complete butt. i would assume that a riva 128 would work and isnt underpowered since it worked without the service pack and it is more graphics card than an s3 virge or whatever

I'm a bit confused now. In your first post you mention nvidia not distributing drivers for the card and now you're talking about a riva 128. . . the riva 128 is an ATI card and the drivers can be d/l'ed right heeeya: http://mirror.ati.com/support/products/pc/rage128/winxp/rage128winxpdrivers.html?cboOS=Windows+XP&cboProducts=RAGE+128&cmdNext=GO%21

My first solution would be to update the drivers but in your first post you mentioned about not finding drivers or whatever. . . anyhow try that out if in fact you are using the riva 128 card. Should solve the problem.

rage 128 is ati
riva 128 is nvidia

riva was a "breakthrough" card at the time and preceeded the TNT series. You go to nvidias site and this is what you get:

D'Oh nevermind me I was confusing myself dyslexic and all. Some reason I swear I was reading and typing rage . . . but anyhow I dunno about that riva card that is pretty old school. Had one on my dell way back like 4+ years ago. For a while I had a S3 card on my parents comp running xp and had no problems. . . might wanna try that card I guess. But yeah looks like you're sol with sp1 and that riva.

I seem to recall that this was a common problem with XP and the Rage 128 cards. I don't know if a solution was ever found as the card is not supported by nVidia under XP.

Since it's affecting the icons and you didn't have the problem at 256 colors, I wonder if changing the registry entry for icon color depth would fix it?

Find: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop\WindowMetrics

and set: Shell Icon BPP = 8

didnt work. The icons are fine but the rest of the screen is B&W. I assume the card is supported because the drivers are included with the OS and it worked fine before teh service pack.

thanks for everyones help this far.

I skim through the replies, so excuse me if it is a repeat.

have ya try rolling back the the video drivers?

goto to hardware manager, properities of the video card....under the driver tab....

I had video problems after I updated the Nvidia drivers on the Microsoft update page. I just roll em back to the way it was before and vola....back to original....

ok, today one of the office assistants asked me what was wrng with her computer. So i went to take a look at it and it had the same issues. Again it was teh same tye system (a micron) and it had teh same video card. This one was working without any problems with SP1 and just started to give her problems today.

I agree Df, time to try to get our office to let go. We have some parts for 5 1900+'s on order. Next month we will order another 5 (damn c.c. limits). They are replacing 10 gateway/dell/micron systems. The gateways have a decent ATI card in it, so it looks liek those cards will be used for the microns until the new systems are built.
