Why do you hate Novell? Anything specific? Like it's any of my business but you know I have to know!

Who doesn't hate novell? All of my friends I know that go to colleges that require for the network hate it. Screws up your comp while on the network and screws it up when you go home not on the network. As the little I have with novell experience I hate it more than the repost nazi himself. But I'm guessing there is something useful of it. . . just not sure.

Novell is a virus, masking as network technology. Once installed, you cannot take it out...even if you find the secret un32.exe, it still leaves little bits all over the place. It is insidious and a tool of Satan himself.

And I just thought it was because they tried to take your Friday away. :D

But when was the last time Novell had a life threatening security problem that never seems to go away?
I might be stirring the pot here but you will not find a better cost effective fileserver and has one of the best firewalls (BorderManager) available. Not mentioning the uptime...I had a server go 3 years without a reboot with 50 Users and 10 printers! My NT/2K servers have to be reset every 30-45 days regardless of the usage.
Yes the client is a pain sometimes but I have installed it on over 500 systems with maybe 20 showing the problems you have stated which always results in a reload of the OS.
That being said my main network is NT only because 2 years ago Novell's pricing was extremely expensive for us to upgrade from our existing Netware 3.12 which were the most reliable servers I have ever had. Not one crash due to software in 8+ years (1992 - 2000) on any of the 5 servers I ran it on.
My NT/2K servers are stable but I have had too many patches screwing the servers up and causing user downtime.
Well, I think I have stirred the pot enough and it is just my humble opinion. Yea the client stinks but I'll take the good and the bad. Drive Image is a wonderful thing.

I worked with Novell when I was a tech on campus. My goodness it was horrible. I would get daily network problems from at least 1 computer a day. Of course we had more than 50 computers. It was a horrible experience. I admit it is or was cheaper than other alternatives which is why my department went with it.

In it's day, Novell was an excellent product but didn't keep up with Microsoft's marketing machine. There's nothing really wrong with it today, and it's directory service still puts AD to shame. But dammit, it was a PITA to manage, especially when 4.x came out.
I've seen at least half a dozen Novell servers (3.12) up and running for over 5 years. Find me a M$ server that does that.

And when the man says 5 years, he means its been 5 years since its been turned off. :) Novell was very stable and as Topane said, its directory structure was amazing. There were parts of Novell that were very well done. And, just like any operating system, there were parts that were the biggest pieces of sh*t you will ever see.

You may say stooopid IPX but I say stooopid non-TCP/IP compliant requiring noobish WINS server for routing garbage. Wow, a mouth full eh?
P.S. This of course only applies to NT but had to say it
