You can get a refurbished one from http://www.RefurbDepot.com for $279 - I know that's not the best but that is what I have found so far.

Buy a used Laserjet 5l or 6l on ebay. about
$150 shipped, but a good printer with pretty cheap toner cartriges, and only 1 or 2 cent per page operating costs, instead of 10-20 for a inkjet.

Dont buy a 5L or 6L
they suck, and always break

Maybe Y2J might have more experience than me. I only sold 12 5Ls and 17 6Ls when I was building machines for people. I personally had a 5L, and own a 6L now. Never had any problems with any of them.
The only problem I had was a friend pulled the power in the middle of printing and it caused a horrible paper jam once. Took 20 minutes to clear!
These are great Lasers in my opinion.

It's been my experience that a person's advice is based on their own experience.
So.. you use a 5L and it breaks, the 5L series sucks...
you use a 5L and it works for 3 years, it's a great printer.
Either way, i appreciate everyone's help and i'm still going to look around more for a cheap, good printer. i absolutely despise color jets because of the rips the companies make off ink cartridges.

well, I have an NEC 660 Superscript
and I have had no problems with it ...
well, the first week it didn't spit the paper out
---> got sent in for an advanced replacement
I would honestly go LASER!
be cause toner is cheap in the long run
and its clean after its printed
and it won't smear,
and its professional looking
and a bunch of other stuff.. =)
well... its only B&W though....

If you're going to be printing stuff like receipts for all your Apex goodies and stuff for school or record keeping definitely go with a Laser. Laser quality will not really improve in the next 2 years, although their processors and memory might get better. So it's worth at look at a used one on eBay. The toner is so cheap compared to a Deskjet that eats money out of your pocket.
The only reason I mentioned my experience is because it includes my sales to people. Other people do all weird kinds of stuff to their machines. I had to help somebody pull a floppy out of a floppy drive. The floppy got stuck because some kids put like 20 paperclips and staples into the drive behind the floppy! This isn't to say a laser can eat paperclips, but they are pretty rugid and durable. I move my 6L around a lot and it hasn't suffered any "motion sickness".

Firstly, I cannot say enough good about the 1100 series. I bought an 1100AXI about 6 months ago and it has worked flawlessly (And yes, I would consider the scanner/copier attachment to be worth the extra dough). I picked mine up for $317 (+$14 shipping) from Accompany (Mobshop) and you can sometimes find that price (After the 20% off) at Mercata.
The other option for you is to go with the NEC Superscript 870. The printer has the same specs, toner is a little more expensive, but you can get it for under $240 if you look.

Most those laser printers have a Mac serial port, so, he can get a Keyspan usb to serial adapter or etc. If you want, email me and I can help him out more on those specifics.

oh, and i'd totally recommend the keyspan adapter, only he has a G4 with no mac serial. He could get a serial to USB adapter, i suppose, but it's been my experience that mixing too many adapters has a tendency to backfire. plus.. adapters run around 70 dollars. quite a rip.
His option was an HP 2100 series, or something of higher cost from HP (4050).
i also saw the epson 5700 series, but well.. my experience with epson SUCKS =) it's also their only laser printer for the mac which irks me.
thanks!
A good mac printer is the Epson 740 USB
Back to the laser talk. We have many 5L's, 6L's, 4P's, 2P's, and 3D's here in the office
The 5L's and 6L's have paper jam problems frequently. The 1100's are far superior.

great, thanks for the advice... you really like jericho?
What can I say? I am a jerichoholic. For 3 or 4 years now, I have been a ayatollah of rock and rolla supporter. He mailed me his autograph last year when he was part of dubbya see dubbya. And he is funny as hell. Sure, he is no Justin Credible, but he still is a great wrestler

Just found this deal on the NEC SuperScript 870...figured you'd want to know.
Onvia has the NEC SuperScript 870 600dpi, 8 page per minute laser printer for $267 - 25 coupon = $242 - $50 rebate = $192 shipped.
Damn good price.

I also recommend the NEC 870 -- bought one about six months ago for right about $220 (rebates, pricematch, etc.) and that thing cranks it out!
I've printed my dissertation on it five times (200 pages each) without a single jam. It's fast, too, so I couldn't be happier. Nothing worse than sitting around for three hours while your printer spits out a paper.
Cya!

Y2J, what kind of paper are you using. I use Georgia Pacific or Xerox 20lb standard white paper. I've only had one jam for the 2 years I've had my 6L and that was because the staright-through exit path was blocked by a large speak hehe.
I would like some info so I know not to do that kind of thing on my printer. Last thing I need printing some important documents at 7 AM is a paper jam!
The Epson 740 is awesome for black text. Damn, it looks near laser quality. I was really impressed with my new HP 930C from that Buy.com deal though. I'm finally printing all those CD cover's I've scanned for my "archived" CDs now hehe http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

actually, i have the 740 from epson. it jams now everytime i print, dam annoying too. i've tried using all sorts of paper, computer paper, printer paper, ruled paper, construction, and even epson paper that cost me almost a dollar a sheet. they all jam. but i don't discount epson at all, i've had a lot of luck with friends after recommending the 740 time after time, and it does well... but for near 30 dollars for a cartridge, 60 for both... laser is looking better and better.

paper jam is the WORST half an hour before an essay is due. you never think it'll happen until it actually happens to you...

If your printer jams that much one of the guiding lips is probably off. If you know how to fix it, just readjust the guides. Sometimes something as simple as crud off of dirty/dusty paper can mess up the rollers and the guides.

You are lucky the. Here we use both letterhead thick paper, and also 20 lb copy paper. Just so you know, HP buys back old printers from large purchaserrs, and the 5L and 6L's command less money than much older, slower, albeit more reliable printers such as the LJ-II
