View Full Version : How come all the stuff on a video card is on the bottom?

Started wondering about this after I saw sho.gun's case and the ramsinks he put on the "bottom" of his video card. Like how come the fan and heatsink are on the bottom of the video card when it's installed in your case? I mean cards nowadays have a whole bunch of neat looking stuff on them, but all of it is so hard to see after you put it in the motherboard. How come they can't put the goodies on the opposite side?

heat efficiency?

Probably the way the pci/agp slots are designed and the way the pcb boards have to be designed to be on the "bottom" side.

Well, since it seems that most manufacturers today just take the easy route and relay the boards according to either Nvidia or ATI's refernce design, things will remain the way they are...with all the goodies on the underside of the card.

its not exactly on the bottom. if you put a card in one of those old cases, it will be on its side. or you can get a WTX which is like an ATX case but upside down. the agp slot will be at the lowest slot in that case, but you should be able to see it if you dont have a pci card right on top of it. you might be able to get a similar effect if you turned you case upside down, but then the power supply would be on the bottom. so the reason they are on the bottom is due to the case and mobo

I change for no one (except for maybe a really hot girl that couldn't get enough of me). They should be flipping the design around for the consumer!

the stuff is on the "bottom" of the card because of AGP standards

DoPeY told me to post this BTW...:)

They can't just simplh flip the design over. The circuits can only work one way on the pcb to the slot. Like Tommy said, there is the WTX standard and thats why the ATX can't just "flip" over the card.
