I’m at Tommy’s house playing on his new iMac. I never knew Macs were so cool. We are trying to do some access some shares on his windows computers but cant figure how to do any of it. He has a switch with 2 XP boxes and this Mac. No domains or anything, just a workgroup called TBNet (lame isn’t it?). Anyway we need to access some shares on the XP boxes. How can we configure the Mac to do that? So far we’ve been burning CD-RW’s to do that but it takes way too long to do that and now we have like 2GB of stuff to move. Thanks for your help

If you're on 10.1 or earlier its a lil' complicated and a lot is made almost too simple by using a program called dave. But if you're on jaguar (10.2) its super easy, just go to "go" then choose "connect to server. . . " or hit the apple key and "k" and it'll bring up a lil menu. From there, you can choose the server i.e. the comp you want to connect to. Super easy from there. Oh and yes, macs are VERY cool now.

Thanks spigidygak, that was super easy. According to Tommy, he didn't think jaguar was going to come with it, but when he opened the box there was a jag spotted X looking straight at him.

Yep all comps after some date. . . uhrm few weeks I think before jaguar's release were supposed to ship with jaguar. But yeah its too easy almost, kinda makes ya wish it'd be that easy to network pcs sometimes. The rendezvous thing is going to kick ass.

thanks spigs.

when i talked to the cs at macconnection she told me that none of thier macs come with 10.2. so when i opened the box and the first thing i saw was the jaguar x i was a little confused. turned out to be the upgrade disc. i installed it and about 2 hours later it was done. saved me 20 bucks :D

from july 17th (99% sure on that one) on, all new macs shipped with jaguar preinstalled.

I would love to do an "i told you so" on that one, but i won't :D

OS 10 is what sold me on apple. I don't like os 9, never really liked it, and avoid it by all possible means. OS X does make a mac so much cooler than before. I'm glad you guys are liking the new machine.

is it just me or are file transfers between macs and pcs really really slow? i tried transferring a 700meg file from my pc to the mac and its going at less than 500kbps with peaks of 1mbps. when i try transferring the same file to my old compaq celery im getting around 40-50mbps with peaks of 70mbps.

what are you using to connect together? I'll use airport and it is a lil' slow but with a hard line its seems just as fast as with pc to pc transfers. . .

i have never had any speed issues when transfering between 2 systems. I never use SMB at home, but at work it has been pretty flawless wired and unwired.

I would checl your cabling to make sure it can handle shigher speeds. It may be too low of quality for higher speed transmission
