View Full Version : Mandrake Linux 9.0, available for download now
LINKIFIED (http://www.linuxcompatible.org/article.php?sid=214)
Now from what I hear, *real* linux users don't like Mandrake, but since it is required for one of my courses, I might make the upgrade.

:hmm: I don't know why some *real* linux users wouldn't like Mandrake: it makes linux easy for the common computer user, which in turn increases the new products available for all linux users.
By the way, is anyone else seeing extremely slow download speeds?

Looks nice... but not a major upgrade over 8.2, other than newer versions of KDE and GNOME. I've already upgraded to the newest KDE anyway, so I'll probably hold off.
Mandrake is a nice distro. A lot of hardcore junkies like to build from scratch, or use something close like Debian... but if you're looking to use Linux as a desktop OS, a Windows replacement, then Mandrake is a really nice way to go. You don't end up with as stripped and lean of a system as Debian or Slackware, but you also don't have to hunt down stuff to add when you want to do simple things.
I've been running Mandrake 8.2 since spring, and loving it....

hmm, does this version have the ssl patches that fix the security issues?

Another vote here for Mandrake 8.2.
I loaded it up on a 20 GB partition and I'm dual-booting it with XP Pro and it works great.
I don't know why "real" Linux folks wouldn't like it, either. It does the job..

Mandrake is pretty good about updating packages for security issues. I know i've downloaded some ssl-related updates for 8.2... but I can't be more specific from here at work when my mandrake machine is at home...
I would assume that unless there are very new flaws, the packages in 9.0 should be up to date....
