In need of: fiber gigabit switch

I'm a student at cwru, we have gigabit fiber running everywhere, but me, being a geek, needs another computer on the network. Prices are too steep to buy from stores, so I was wondering if anyone has a (at least 3 port) gigabit fiber switch, (multimode)

(Checks pockets) Here, I have one... no, wait, that's copper gigabit... (rummages thru desk drawers) aha! Oops, no, that's fiber channel... maybe over here, behind the Network Appliance... or is it still hooked up to that old Cray in the basement?

Seriously, they actually allow students to take fiber gigabit ports?? Those guys are like $2500/port on the switch...

Well, You'll never actually get a 1Gbps of throughput out of it, let alone even 500Mbps. It's wishful thinking though... good luck finding a hub.

this is true.. but its much faster than 100mbps though... its fast, and my computer is very slow actually, i'm buying a new one too. but the greatest thing is... its not like 100bt where you have one connection then make another, and it slows down the other one. it doesn't really lag all that much

Heh - that's pretty cool!

Here's one tip I learned when installing GB connections on a server - the absolute best thing you can do to bring the throughput up is to use a 64-bit PCI NIC. Using a 32-bit card with copper GB will get you about 100-200 Mbps throughput (hardly worth it). The same connection with a 64-bit card will bump that up to about 400Mb. Of course, fiber will be slightly faster.
