What I want to know is how much and will it work with certain mods made in a certain foreign country on my PS2. Not as if they all aren't Japanese, but the Japanese early version.

just visited the games page (http://www.gotapex.com/games.php) and saw that gear02 posted up the same story earlier today with this press release (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20020926/tc_nm/tech_sony_playstation_dc_2)

I still think the xbox would be better suited for a tivo...

I'll link this thread to the games page. Thanks Tommy!

Heh sweet but. . . network adapter and now tv adapter. . . I smell a ps2 redesign in the works.

And gear. . . what makes you think the xbox is better of a tivo box than the ps2? Seems like to me its the same if anything I see xbox with a dissadvantage with the hard drive being inside and the consumer not able to replace it without voiding the warranty. But i suppose they could release a tivo version but. . . thats just stupid, leaves the current xbox owners out of water.

Yeah...I guess your right. I just see the Xbox has already having a hard drive and the PS2 needing to buy one, and since it took Sony a million years to release a network adapter, the Sony HD is a long ways from now.

But you do have a good point. I can see multiple manufacturers making different sized PS2 HD (assuming Sony doesn't go proprietary). In that case, the PS2 would be a better bet. I was just thinking exisiting technology.

I do think a PS2 redesign would be a natural progression, but it reminds me of the NES redesign and the PSOne design, which was a last ditch attempt to get people to buy the console just before it slides into oblivion.

AND I forgot to link this thread...grrr...

Hmm I soo doubt sony would go proprietary. . . I mean the thing usese ide and people have put in a drive out of curiosity and the thing spins up. So all you need is the firmware for the ps2 to recognize it. I suppose they could get you there, but I doubt it since sony would be more interested in getting out as many hard drive systems out there to push on software sales than try to start mfg hard drives and make a profit out of them. Most likely they will contract with some oem hd mfg for the drives and sell them at near cost. And yes it did take sony a WHOLE freaking what 2 years to realease the network adapter? But hey its not like xbox has had service this long and it didn't come at the same time as the ps2 so market time wise I'd say ms is ever so slightly behind especially with this pay for service crap. . . ah there I go again I'll stop before I bitch more about ms. Just in the bitching mode today . . . cause I hate sony for everything else in the world heheh. Its like playing with gasoline and matches  Damn maybe I should get back to my roots and pickup a gamecube at least I have an ounce of repsect for nitendo somewhere.

i dont think that sony will go completely propriety either. whats the use of going any way other than ide when its the cheapest mass storage currently mass produced. im sure they will make a proprietary casing and interface for it because thats just the way sony is. as far as a redesign goes, they may put together a packaged in one unit and sell it as a special edition but its more likey that the ps3 will come with the nic and hd standard. actually most of the rumors say that ps3 will be networked for gaming and processing to give it an edge in the gaming market.

From what I understand, they started the R&D of the PS3 before the PS2 even released. So the way I figure, the PS3 will come out first will all of the bells and whistles the X-box has and more, THEN the add-ons for the PS2 will come out (for those cheap bastids who don't want to pay the 400 for the PS3.

Hehe maybe if sony wasn't looking to make any money they would do that. But its more marketable to release all the accessories for the ps2 before the ps3. That way there's a bigger market to purchase the accessories rather than if the ps3 came out, the ps3 owners would have no need to buy the stuff. So release accessories, then release ps3, then release ps2 re-design. Get the most money out of the consumer :hehehmm:

The XBox's hard drive wouldn't be all that useful for TIVOing. That 8-10GBs of space would fill up too fast. Isn't the PS2 going to have a much larger hard drive?

Would we see a slow down on game titles being released on PS2 in anticipation of PS3? Actually, what I should really be asking is what is the estimated ETA for PS3?

True. But I seem to remember Microsoft was planning an Xbox that was also one of there Tivo/Direct TV boxes. If I get an xbox, that would be the one I'd get.

Heh. . .yeah I'm done for now on the avatar. . . hehe. Lets just say I'm VERY bored and didn't feel like doing anything better. But about the ide thing I think I read it also in an EGM magazine, within the last month or so. They said they hooked up an ide drive and it spun up and what not. I cna't confirm myself. . . since. . . well . . .

You know how to get to the HDD compartment right? Well for those who don't know, turn the PS2 upside down and there's two removable covers. The smaller one is for the network adapter, and the larger one is for the HDD. So, that's why I thought Sony might go proprietary since you would need the HDD in an enclosure to fit into that compartment.

I haven't read that EGM about them hooking an IDE drive to it. Can someone summarize?

from what ive read on the ps2 linux harddrive, its an ide drive but it wont work in a pc. they may have used most of the same hardware, but it wouldnt be too hard to just change the pcb on the harddrive to make it only work in a ps2
