I'm sure this has been posted before, but whatever. We're looking at HDTV Sonys and Toshibas. I'll welcome any other brands too. What problems will I have w/ the 16:9, how tolerable are they when you're watching "normal" aspect ratio stuff, and how well do they go with my Playstation 2?

i'm not sure, but i think the conclusion that has been reached here is that it is a better value for your money to buy a larger 4:3 screen.

basically, i think quality will be the same (as you can get HDTV sets that are 4:3). however, it seems to me that the experts on this subject (around here, anyway), say that 4:3 screens are "cheaper per inch" than 16:9 screens.

consequently, you can get a "bigger" 4:3 picture and the same size 16:9 picture for a lower price.

if i wasn't lazy, i'd search for the thread about it....

So you would be better off with the current tech getting a 36" HDTV over a 30" widescreen? Right since you would be getting around the same widescreen size.

Well, we decided to go with the 16:9 because we really only watch movies and play games in that room, so the broadcast stuff isn't a big deal. Looks like this:

I got a Toshiba widescreen about a year and a half ago and I love it!! They all pretty much have build in features to "stretch" 4:3 images to fit the wide screen and as far as I'm concerned it looks just as good. Playstation on a widescreen works great, especially if you are playing a game with a split screen. Each screen is much larger and easier to see (plus having the whole sound setup can be pretty cool for some games).

I have a Mitsubish 55" WideScreen. Watching TV on it is better on some days than others depending on my cable signal. I don't mind it that much really. But again, I watch a lot of movies and play games in the room. I do watch normal TV in there and it is not as clear as a 27" TV since most signals from the Cable and Dish stations are based on 4:3 27" TV you do see problems with the signal, but it is not that bad. IMHO.
