When are the processor's that are capable of "hyperthreading" expected to be available?

Nice! i thought i saw a street price of $195 somewhere on the net.
no use in getting that board yet IMO. Need the ht p4's to hit its potential. By than better boards will be out for less.
2.8 volts is that what he ran that cpu at? :P
Wheres' the 3dmark scores btw?
Hows the ti4x00's interact with board. The 9700pro?

For the home users, what multi-tasks would they want to perform at the same time.... burning a DVD while playing a game?
Sounds like a cheaper way to go would be to buy
another computer.

There were several prices listed on PW, 2 were around 130.
THe board is still better than SIS boards, as far as memory bandwidth goes.
The voltage was supposed to be 1.8, I wrote that part at 3 am, so gimme a break ;).
I didn't have a ti4x or a 9700, I had a 9000pro. I should be getting one rather soon.

Its not just multi-tasking, the system as a whole would run faster. You have to remember that there are multiple programs running all of the time, not just ones that you, yourself, run.
As to how much of a performance increase there will be, we will have to wait for the new processors and see.

apps must be written so they are multithreaded in order for the actual app to benefit from hyper threading. Any apps that are not multithreaded will see no benefits

This is true, however, many programs are already written with multi threaded code, win2k/xp will be able to use this, it wont be long until you see games implement it also. SMP cost too much and was aimed at the high-end crowd, thus you only saw Q3 with it. However, now that it comes down to one processor you will see more game developers jump on the bandwagon, provided that HT does increase performance by a great deal.

I got this from techbargains.com this morning:

Personally I'd save the $60 and buy the Albatron 845PE board for $90
just doesn't say ASUS on it and is overclockable to around the same level.

Does the albatron have all of the features of the Asus, such as Serial ATA, Gigabit Ethernet, the ADI sound (much better than most mobo manu's onboard sound), crash-recovery BIOS, I can go on. I am sure the Albatron board is good (and I am looking into getting one for review), but for 60 bucks less they must have cut corners somewhere.

I tend to agree with DREDD.
Why spend all that $ when you cant use the ht yet. Get a cheaper board for now. When you can get the ht p4 than get a board like the asus but go with the dual channel DDR.
Otherwise go Rambus for ultimate performance right now. $$$!
The reviews on the albatron show it ocing as well as the asus 845x boards. Not to many people use em though, go figure.

Serial ATA...months away from actual affordable drives use it why buy it now? Gigabit Ethernet...12.5MB/sec bandwidth on 100-Base-T not enough for you? Becides my DSL only supports so much of that 100Mbps anyway. Built in ADI sound...er...no thanks my Hercules GameTheaterXP does me right. Crash-Recovery BIOS...just clear the CMOS and take an extra 30seconds to reload not a big issue to me.

just FYI: Albatron was founded by former Gigabyte executives and they hired much of the engineers from gigabyte as well. Basically you're buying a Gigabyte board without the stamp on it :-)

Serial ATA is NOT "months away" from having drives on the market, I know that for a fact. Gigabit would be nice if you had the hardware, and its for internal transfers, I have waited hours sometimes to transfer gigs of info to and from computers.
Also, if you had actually read the P4PE review, you might have noticed that I said the ADI sound is BETTER than the GTXP, in my opinion. It doesn't have the breakout box, but the sound is clearer. Also, with the crash recovery you dont have to worry about cmos resetting, 30sec is a big issue to me.
There is also other features of the board, and Asus's impeccable warrenty.

heh but it will never sound better than when I run optical to my HT system :-P
plus $60 is a lot bigger deal than serial ATA which like I said is NOT IN THE AFFORDIBLE RANGE yet for the drives, and gigabit ethernet...even with my 5GB video files it is only a few minutes transfer on 100Mbps networks.

I hate to break it to you, but the prices for SATA drives are going to be more or less in line with PATA drives.
Also, the ADI sound, again if you bothered to read my review, DOES have optical AND coaxial out.

correct me if i'm wrong, but your system has foster based xeons for the cpu's. The foster dont support hyperthreading and the prestonia do. The prestonia isnt available right now. or is it?
I have read conflicting reports, so i dont know for sure
