Cheaper to run Linux than Windows or Solaris

The cost of running Linux is roughly 40% that of Microsoft Windows, and only 14% that of Sun Microsystem's Solaris, according to a new study which examined the actual costs of running various operating systems over three years.

The study, by the Robert Frances Group, in Westport, Conn., looked at production deployments of Web servers running on the three operating systems at 14 Global 2000 enterprises.

Linux cost $74,475 over three years, while a Windows deployment cost $190,662 and one on Solaris $561,520.

im not really suprised, given that ms makes you pay for everything through the nose.

its a double edge sword though, windows is a business standard which anyone who has used a computer knows how it works. linux, on the other hand, is a forien language to most. microsoft hands out certs to anyone who can memorize a book, while ive never seen a linux cert. so its easy for companies to find an mcse but when they want to deploy a linux based system they dont know where to look.

the funny thing is, if you install linux (let's say mandrake 8.1) onto a few systems, I can almost bet that someone will be able to find their way around. There isn't a a start button, but damn if there is a gear that you can press and BAM! a a pop-up window ala windows start button appears. People make linux out to be something so insanely diffucult. Bash and command prompts are one thing (ie diffcult) but if your just doing what most people do on a pc, it's like cake, because atleast the KDE desktop, looks extremely similar to a windows based desktop. heh.

something i forgot to add in my last post. not only are linux installs cheaper to purchase (you dont have to), but there are a lot of free apps to run. you can get plenty of business apps for free which is the opposite of windows. you wanna buy office from ms for an enterprise, thats more than windows itself
