To simply put it. Get the 2.4 ghz phone. It makes a BIG difference. I can go a block down my street and it's perfect. If you live in the dorms it's ideal. The brand that I recommend in the Panasonic 2.4 GHZ phone. (the blue one) It's a good investment (200 bucks) I KNOW you can find it for cheaper though. I've seen people get it for 150 easy.

I'm looking for a good deal on any GOOD cordless phones.
Are the 900 MHz and 2.4 MHz comparable? Can you really tell the difference in terms of clarity?
I know Mercata had some deals, but I need to find one where there are rebates, and you end up paying only measly 10-20 clams or so.
Am I insane, or can someone help me out?

Haha, yeah, I meant 2.4 GHz.
Guess I'M the one who's clueless!
I think $150 is still too much to spend.
I'm talking about under $50 here.

For anyone who wants a 2.4GHZ phone, the Pansonic KXTG2570S is one of the best .. and they even make it in the cool silver color! It's very hard to find, and it retails for $199 - $219 at most places, but it's in stock (Silver only) and can be had at <A HREF="http://www.hagglezone.com">Hagglezone</A> for a winning haggle price of $159.05 - after shipping, a $168 purchase. (Your mileage may vary, as *everything* is negotiable! http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/tongue.gif) The phone has Caller-ID, a digital answering system, etc. all built in .. how can you go wrong?

Well this EXPERT hasn't tried it I guess. Whatever it is I am POSITIVE that the 2.4 ghz phone has better range than the 900mhz phone.

I saw the "good" panasonic 2.4 GHZ at Costco for $99, they also have a more expensive one for around $150.

How is V-Tech comparable to other name brands like Panasonic?

For $30, I think the V-tech would be fine. It's not the GREATEST phone, but If you want to pay <$50 on a 2.4Ghz phone, well you have to get what you can. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

I was talking to our communications wizard at work( He is responsible fot our telecommunications system) about 900 Mhz versus 2.4 GHz phones.. He said that the frequency has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with range. And from the various tests I see from places like Consumer Reports, I tend to agree. However, there may be certain instances where there are exceptions.

It depends on how the question was worded to the expert. If the prior post's implied question was what was asked, then the expert was right. If the question was detailed ans specified the existence of buildings, interference in certain specific frequency ranges (not just random frequencies), and other factors, then the 2.4 GHz would have a greater range (particularly when 2.4 Ghz phones usually use greater power). If someone asked me that question, I could give either answer based upon how the question was asked. Sometimes, an expert is not the best person to ask because he or she may answer the question exactly as it was asked.
In real world situation, the 2.4 Ghz frequencies have greater penetration through buildings, so there is that apparant aspect of better reception. In my case, all 900 Mhz phones within xx feet of me are jammed by my own household/car wireless systems, so if you asked the question of me, heh, I would have to say 2.4 Ghz is better. In the future, I am migrating some of my datacomm to 2.4 Ghz, so I will have the same problem. When that happens, I would answer you truthfully that in my case the old 48 Mhz phones are best depending on how you asked the question (right now, I am using only 48 Mhz since all my 900 Mhz phones are useless due to severe interference).

The guy at work did say that the 2.4 GHz would probably bounce off of objects better than the 900 MHz phones. He also said that the placement of the antenna will really help. He said to try an external antenna with a wire running to the existing antenna. Another thing: the phones are limited to .1 watts ( 100 milliwatts). Supposedly, anything over that requires a license. He said that increasing the wattage would really help.

Sighted WED, July 19: my local Seattle area Sam's Club has a 2.4 GHz cordless phone for $49. It was not located with the normal bunch of phones but was in one of those freestanding "piles" of merchandise displayed in one of the main aisles.

How do you "increase" the wattage?
bonboncat

Guess Costcom / Sam's Club is the best way to go.
Mercata has some nice phones, but I'd want to see them face up to see the "quality".
Thanks everyone!

I had my office buy me the Panasonic 2.4ghz phone, and its incredible. We have 150+ worstations, and another 30 or so other electronic devices (fax machines, network printers, etc). I also happen to sit less than 20' away from the main electrical room (which I know for a fact puts out alot of EMF, since I couldn't get a shielded cat5 wire to pump data through the room).
The phone works for at least 100 yards in the opposite direction of the electrical room, and about 70 or so when i'm on the other side of it. With a regular cordless phone, I get maybe 30% that range. I know this isn't the most scientific analysis of how well the phone works, but basically, 2.4ghz is definately the way to go... soon as i find one that's cheap enough, I'll buy one for home.

OK, first person to overclock a PHONE (i.e., increase the wattage? You people are nuts...) wins a prize.

FOLLOWUP TO PRIOR POST IN THIS THREAD:
The $49 2.4Ghz phone at Sam's Club is made by Northwestern Bell. The base station has no keypad or visible antenna, but does have a "page" button.

The only fault I can find with the Panasonic phone is that the battery life isn't as long as my my previous cordless phones. I say I get about 4 hours and then I need a charging.

I think that they make external amplifiers, like for two way radios and ham radios. I don't know that much about them.

Just posted this in another thread:
For those of you who were looking for a cordless phone deal, this one is killer. Every time we've had a vstore coupon, I've had this posted on bigbigsavings and it sells out real fast. It's a GREAT phone too. A friend of mine owns one and he could go almost a block away and it still works perfectly. Please note, the following link is to the GotApex vstore, so you'll be supporting this site if you buy it.
Link: http://www.vstore.com/cgi-bin/pagegen/vstoreelectronics/gotapex/page.html?mode=products&file=/page/itempagev4/itempage.spl&prodID=1101071&catID=16077
Use coupon code NW5J when you check out. There is a $20 rebate plus the code will get you 30% off (up to $20 off, so another $20). In the end the phone is $29.96 plus shipping, a great price for this phone.
Enjoy!

I've got both a 900MHz (analog) and the Panasonic TG2570 2.4GHz phone. They sit near each other, both with about equal amount of obstacles (not many in this case). The $20 900MHz has approximately the same range as the $200 2.4GHz. Some days, the 900MHz actually goes farther.
Also - Beware!!! The Panasonic 2570 has no mute button (or any other way to listen in on a conference call without the participants hearing what's going on on your end). Mute is fairly standard on cordless phones, and is certainly standard on speaker phones - but Panasonic apparently decided that it wasn't too important on their flagship item! Since I plan to use it for work (and plenty of conference calls), it's basically useless, so I have to return it.
