This is per Loren on KGTV, San Diego (The weatherman)

Ant Bait Recipe
Loren's Field Notes
The ants which are climbing up and down your trees, plants and kitchen counter are called Argentine ants. They are not native to our area, and while ants are important to the environment, these are not. They kill our native ants, are harmful to both exotic and native plants and are just plain annoying.

Loren can help you with your ant problem with his special ant bait. You'll find it effective, but be patient -- it may take a week to 10 days to be fully effective.

In the meantime kill ants in the house with Windex or another ammonia-based cleaner. Clean and kill, all in one motion.

Recipe:

1 part 20 Mule Team Borax or Boric acid
9 parts of a sweet sticky liquid like maple syrup, honey or Karo syrup
Mix the ingredients. Heating in a double boiler may speed the process. Take an empty margarine tub and poke 4 holes around the bottom edge (entry holes for ants to walk in).

Place a dollop the size of a quarter in the middle of the tub, then put the top back on. This mixture is not non-toxic, however it is less toxic, and that's the key to its success.

The ants carry it back to the nest where they feed it to the entire colony and wipe out the nest.

oh hell yeah I hate those damn ants! Just like the article says, all damn day they're going up and down the citrus trees, across the sidewalks, across the counters. It's enough to make a person crazy. And if you leave a small portion of food on the counter or possibly in the sink then forget it. They'll have about 1 million of their workers there within the hour to get it. That's when I come in with Mr Clean and wipe all of their sorry asses out! They get in the shower too. Fortunately we have one of those removeable shower head massager wand things(Yeah, one of those) and down the drain they go! It's always the highlight of my day, killing those bastards... Sorry, but I hate those ants, lol. :P

I've tried that recipe with some success.

But i tell you..the BEST thing that i've used to get rid of those ants is a granular poison you can get at home depot (kinda looks like kitty litter). 5lb bag is ~$8.00

It works SUPERBLY. I guess it might be a problem with pets and kids, but if you can keep them away for a couple of hours, the ants are completely wiped out.

When I get the attack of those pestie ants.. I get out my trusty Orange Glo Cleaning Spray and spray them. The spray kills them right away. The orange has a nice scent which works for me. Plus I also spray it in the trash and it keeps them from getting in..
So now I try to remember to clean the kitchen counters off when I am done and it does seem to work. Just another idea... :)
