Ok, I am one cheap ass, and I am sure there are alot of others cheapos around here like me.
So a friend and I are looking to put our skills to the test and make ourselves a project which will attract consumers and make us money. We are both extremly proficient in web based development but we both dearly lack creativity and ideas. We are the type of people who are specifications and like a machine grind, out the solution.
So what can we make that you will pay for? If cheapos like you and I will buy it then most other people would too. I am not saying something that you would put your hard earned money on, I am talking about like $5 for membership or like $3/month. Something real cheap that we can beef up our wallets a little bit with.
Thanks

Uhm. . . what the hell are you "selling?" . . . I'm soooooo lost at what you are asking for on how much to pay for. Pay for what? Try just starting up a biz in designing webpages for people. But the amount people are willing to pay are dependant on how experienced, how good and how many other clients you got. So might be tough really. You'll probably make more money at a 9-5 job really.

We aren't selling anything, anything yet anyway. We want to be selling something, but we have no idea what to sell. We aren't trying to get rich from this either, we just want a side project for chunk change.
The thought of making sites for other people came to mind, but we would need alot of advertising to find actual intrested customers. We are looking for something that we can do which anyone can buy. A possible example could be a counter service, for $1/month you put this line of code in your html and you got yourself a customizable counter with no advertising.
The question rephrased could also be, What services do/would you but on the internet?
Maybe a forums service could be useful, it will only attact people with websites which is a downside because not everyone has a website. But would any of you actually pay for a forum?

I don't mean to be crude or insulting but. . . you guys are about 5 years too late. The internet boom was back then, now its bust. Pretty much anything anyone could want or will want has been done and gone straight to chapter 11 :hehehmm: But maybe there's some idea out there

Well as I have been saying, We aren't trying to make a quick million or anything. We would just like to make a website which would give us a few extra dollars in our pockets. We both have jobs that we intend to keep (unless we find better ones).
We are trying to figure out what services people would pay for so we can create them, like a fully function forum. Plenty of people know HTML but none would have the slightest clue of how to get it up and running. This is just an example to illustrate a service which some people might pay for.
And again, we aren't looking to get rich or looking to quit our jobs, but we both have some free time which would be nice to turn a small profit from.

Would you actually pay for membership to a site like that though? Even if its a one time $5 fee (which is a pefect dollar range in my opinion), I doubt I would with a great site like G|A running around.

Why do you need to have it membership-based? You make commission off sales.

I'd pay for a really nice online dictionary. No advertising, quick loading, comprehensive. I'd also pay for a kick ass search engine like google. Hopefully with the money they'd be able to make an even better search engine. I'm not sure anyone would pay for a web counter; there are a whole lot out there that we can pay for and a few that are free. I've been looking for a free online journal, perhaps you could fund it with advertising. Another idea I had is a website that had car dealers fight it out to sell us a car. I've also wanted to sell my mad computer graphics skilz. Like pay-per-custom graphics/icons. Perhaps I should start an "Ideas for your .com.com"

You should sell pop up advertsing to webmasters. Also, I hear magic beans are lucrative nowadays. I also recommend bottling oxygen and selling it as designer air. Maybe you could patent the sun and charge everyone for going outside and get a royalty for all crops gorwn using photosynthesis.

That's a great idea. I would bet that rich people will pay for custom oxygen. you could sell it in an inhailor form or somthing that goes just below your nose. You could "bottle" it in your garage and ship it to your customers. Normal air is only 21% You can have an "as seen on TV" add that says you'll live longer or that people NEED 40% oxygen. You could take rigged machines that say air is too poluted so if you say live in NY or fly on air planes, you need this product.
If people knew how to make money on the net, everyone would be doing it.
Yes, its possible to make money off the net. Not everyone will and can though. There is a lot of competition out there with a good plan/setup being needed.
"What web services would you pay for?" Honestly not much.
"Would you actually pay for membership to a site like that though?" No. First, "free" web services continue to be the alternative and pick up the slack. Second, not many web sites that want $ are worth it imo.
The internet is increasingly becoming pay driven. Some sites are doing this: the basic stuff is "free" with more goodies/coverage being for subscribers.
Finally I believe we are only beginning to see what the internet is capable of.

I would pay a membership fee if you'd call me every Monday night and remind me to put the garbage at the curb.

I'd also say porn...
The internet is good for two things. Porn...and something else...I forgot...

Just look for what people are looking for and make it readily available. See: http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51731

This is a perfect example.
Selling intangibles rarely works on the internet. Think about all the great "services" that site offered that sucked, didn't do well, or aren't doing that great right now. Like spigs said, you're a bit late on this. I'm not going to pay you $5 for access to deals when I can find them on G|A and other sites like it. Even material things are a hard sell, and typically aren't very profitable. Save your money and time and sell lemonade on the corner. That's where the money is, roadside lemonade stands.
Oh, and about this:

It's been done, somewhere I heard about designer oxygen bars. It was all scented and supposedly great. That little fad went the way of cigars and scooters.

There is an oxygen bar here in downtown orlando. I don't know anyone who is a big enough wannabe trend-F*** to actually go in there.
no offense but if i had an idea that i thought would make money, i'd prolly use it myself

I'd pay for a web service that'll give me all the e-mail addresses of the spammer that won't stop sending me these stupid e-mails. Then I'd be willing to pay a little more for that boy to get spammed up his @$$ heck....shove a can of :spam: up his butt and let him feel the joy of spamming.

I suppose I was taking the oxygen bars a bit farther, here you'd have a "portable" oxygen bar.
Wait, and what about scooters cigars?
I still see tons of kids (and college students) with the little one foot rad scooters. Plus, even if you have your one shot idea, your still probably rather well off. Even if your idea fails, you can hopefully make some profit of when it was trendy. I say we bring back pogs j/k.
As for the "I'd use any good idea I had," That is called greed. You may argue that they deserve the money, but it's still greedy. That is assuming they didn't donate large %ages of their money to worthy charities.
Furthermore, I'd love to put my head together with someone else and think sh*t up. Two minds are greater than one and you're going to have tons of bad ideas before you come up with a good idea. With that said, I am glad you(pl.) keep batting down my ideas, it's a bit like having a private firm that lets me know when one of my ideas REALLY won't work, though I was hoping for a little constructive criticism. Hey, but you'll motivate me to get my ass off the couch if I get a good idea right? I don't think I'm brave enough to start a buisness all on my own.
