what would make my computer smokin is if i had a 15k RPM HDD. hehe. although i noticed that after i put in 128 MB more ram into my parents' junk computer, there was only a slight different. and it went from 64 MB to 192MB. i myself went from 128 to 640 and only saw a noticeable difference.

Just curious...
I've got a P4 2.0 with 512 RAM. I use my computer mostly for web surfing and some graphic design (2D and some occasional 3D), nothing too heavy. I've heard RAM's an important factor that determines your computer's speed, but I'm sure that there's a certain point where it just doesn't help anymore. For what I do, would it actually help if I had a Gig of ram, or even more?

it also depends the OS you got. Win98 or any Win9x Os's will hit a point where it doesn't really mater anymore. Win2k and (i beleive) Winxp will always find a use for the extra ram.

I've found 512MB to be nice for running Win2k/WinXP.

It can't hurt ArkiStan, but the returns diminish. Guess it gets down to if you want to get more ram and want to spend the money.

"I've heard RAM's an important factor that determines your computer's speed" The cpu is more of a major factor.

Having more ram allows you to run more application at the same time. It also stops hard drive thrashing. This happens when files are being swapped to virtual space on the hard drive when the ram runs out of room.

no no no... ram is actually a more important factor that cpu speed... u could have a 2.8 gighrz p4 and 64 megs of ram and that proc would be rendered useless... or u could have an 800 mhz p3 with 1 gig of ram thatd run things better... in order of importance, it goes ram, cpu, and then things like os and vid card... now i know windows ME :shudder: allocates ram in a way that it doesnt conserve it... so after a day of being on ur system is laggy if u dont have a lot of ram

That's why you get third party software that can clean out and release the ram for you. ;)

As far as ram being more important than CPU speed, I don't agree. Given, if you don't even have enough ram to run your operating system, your processor speed won't matter, but that works both ways. That's like saying if you have a 133 MHz running XP with 1 gig of ram, you will be better off. As long as you meet the minimum requirements for ram, the CPU becomes more important.

133 mhz running XP with 64 megs of ram... trust me... it works... thats what some of my comp 106 comps are... p2's... its sad really :dodgy:

I have 768 megs. Its good. The most I've ever used at one time was 500 somthing during video editting, winamp and websurfing. I imagine at that point the cpu became my bottle neck not the ram.

Oh, I'm sure it works... but what I am saying is this: 64 megs of ram is less than the recommended/required ram. Back in the old days, I had Win95 running on 4 megs of ram, even though I think 8 was minimum recommended. Needless to say, it ran, but it ran very poorly... I added 16 megs of ram and there you go, it was running great. It just needed the minimum recommended ram.

So, if you gave those 133 w/ 64 meg computers the 128 megs that XP calls for, the ram is no longer the limiting factor; the CPU is.

An 800 MHz with 128 megs of ram running XP will be faster than a 133 with even 256 or 512.
