'Sopranos' Parade Invites Cause Stir (http://abcnews.go.com/wire/Entertainment/ap20021009_2339.html)

NYC Mayor Bloomberg Invites 'Sopranos' Stars to March in Columbus Day Parade, Draws Criticism

In a recent episode of "The Sopranos," members of Tony Soprano's crew got into a fight with another group over a Columbus Day celebration.

Now, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has asked two of the show's cast members to march in New York's Columbus Day parade. But no one told the parade planners, who dislike the HBO mob drama because they say it perpetuates negative images of Italian-Americans.

"The show stereotypes the Italo-American family in the worst way," said Larry Auriana, president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, which is organizing Monday's parade. "Besides the whole crime element, it shows Italo-Americans as uneducated, low-life brutes.

"This," Auriana added, "is not the mayor's parade."

Bloomberg asked Dominic Chianese, who plays Tony's Uncle Junior, and Lorraine Bracco, who plays psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi, to take part in the parade. The foundation previously has turned down requests for "Sopranos" actors to appear at the annual event.

Cory Richman, assistant to Chianese's manager, Brian Liebman, said Chianese planned to accept the mayor's invitation.

"As a citizen of New York, I am proud to march with Mayor Bloomberg in the Columbus Day parade," the actor said through his manager.

Messages left for Bracco's representatives were not immediately returned. HBO had no comment.

Bloomberg said Wednesday he invited the actors because of the work they do on behalf of the city: Bracco as a spokeswoman on environmental issues, Chianese for making a public service announcement for tourism.

"I didn't invite them as members of 'The Sopranos.' I didn't invite any other member of the 'Sopranos' cast," the mayor said. "These are two nice people who have gone out of their way to help the city."

"I apologize if anybody's offended," he said, but added, "if you are offended, don't wave back when they wave to you."

William Fugazy, president of the Coalition of Italo-American Associations, called the invitations "a disgrace."

"It's a sort of sacred day for Italo-Americans. Our parade is about heritage and pride. Certainly, the 'Sopranos' haven't done much for heritage and pride in our community."

Fugazy's words sound a lot like the ones Silvio Dante uses in the Sept. 29 episode of "The Sopranos," upon learning that an American Indian group plans to protest just days before a Columbus Day parade in New Jersey.

"Ultimately, it's anti-Italian discrimination," says Silvio, played by Steven Van Zandt. "Columbus Day is a day of Italian pride, it's our holiday, and they want to take it away."

Later in the show, several guys in Tony's crew descend on the American Indians' demonstration. The two groups brawl, resulting in several arrests.

A few years ago, then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani brokered a deal in which Fugazy who concedes that he enjoys the show despite his often stinging criticisms of it met with HBO officials. Fugazy said the network pledged to tone down the program, though HBO denies it made any deal.

I don't know about this point. Afterall when was the last time you went into a pizzaria or any other Italian establishment without seeing a picture of Tony and his crew. I would wager that the Sopranos is even more popular among Italians then the population as a whole.

As for celebrating the holiday...I think it is very important that we remember the man who first discovered America and firmly planted a Spanish flag here.

I'm Italian too, and personally I don't find much reason to have pride in Christopher Columbus, unless you are big fan of genocide (http://www.dickshovel.com/colum.html).

Yeas ago Christopher Columbus was taught as a hero. Now he's considered a villian. The reality is more complex than either version.

from that article:
"Second, and related to the first, is the advancement of an active militant campaign to demand that federal, state, and local authorities begin the removal of anti-Indian icons throughout the country. Beginning with Columbus, we are insisting on the removal of statues, street names, public parks, and any other public object that seeks to celebrate or honor devastators of Indian peoples. We will take an active role of opposition to public displays, parades, and celebrations that champion Indian haters. We encourage others, in every community in the land, to educate themselves and to take responsibility for the removal of anti-Indian vestiges among them."

Ahh yeah some dips want to remove such bad words as braves from the vocabulary. Is braves a bad word? Survey says: no!

Everyone remember the Fightin' Whities which totally backfired. :bigmouth: http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41051

Ok first of all-let me just say that I DO NOT WATCH THE SOPRANO'S because I don't have HBO nor do I agree with what the show represents...But if I had HBO I would probably watch it for entertainment/comparison value-ie: big hair, gawdy outfits vs. my relatives). I am in a fairly high ranking position in OSIA (Organization of the Sons of Italy in America)in my area and I can assure you -no TRULY ETHICAL Organization representing the Italian American or American Italian communities in these United States of America support the show THE SOPRANOS. As a matter of fact-OSIA-which is the largest organization of Italian Americans in the US had a petition last year to have the show removed as it depicted Italians in a terrible light. The actors who portray the characters on the show-are ITALIAN/AMERICAN ..that is probably why they were asked to be in the COLUMBUS DAY PARADE...because they are OF ITALIAN HERITAGE..not because they were demonstrating their love of La Casa Nostra..
god forbid someone of Italian descent get a job doing anything but construction or bread baking.if they do they are immediately "connected"..and that is just ridiculous. Bloomberg is a ass..talk about insulting an entire community of Italian Americans because he has a bug up his ass about a TV show..
I CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY..big time! I'm a FLAG WAVING, GNOCCI EATING,ALMOND THROWING Italian AMERICAN AND I AM PROUD. and yes..Columbus was italian, hence the celebration of the day in his name by other italians..because he was FAMOUS-BECAUSE HE WAS A POOR KID from Genoa who made name for himself...and like all good italians before him, his family, and friends made a big huge deal out of him being able to sail a boat and get the hell out of the impoverished beginnings he was leaving behind to seek a better life...(any italian mother does the same)..and with the help of those crazy spaniard brothers-Martin and Vincente Pinzon..they set forth to find this great land we live in and vacation spots nearby..
I'm truly sorry that the indian people are offended by Columbus day..I'm also sorry that lives were taken, and slavery was abounding in the search for a new world..but I hardly see where all italian american people should take the rap for this..I'm sure that the indians did their share of killing, pilaging, of "the white man" that went unreported..Come on people NO RACE is perfect, Italian,German,African,Jewish,Irish,etc..
Has it come to the time when we should ban all parades for fear of offending some dip**** Mayor?..should we end all holiday celebrations for fear of the past rising like a phoenix out of the ashes..
Shall we say it's the end of St.Patrick's Day, Chanuka, Christmas,FOURTH OF JULY? ..
Until then..VIVA ITALIA! VIVA COLUMBUS!
