Last night when I was sleeping I woke up and i couldn't move... it was scary. I tried moving my head but I just couldn't. I'm thinking that it's probably just a dream but I was awake, on my bed, staring at my comforter, and CAN'T MOVE!
Oh and while this is happening my heart just started beating faster and faster like I'm having a heart attack... the heck is wrong with me. This isn't the first time either.

I don't think your head fell asleep, if that was the case, you'd passout in a jiffy.

actually... we sleep in cycles , if u will. theres different periods of sleep. a couple of my co-workers are majoring in psychology, and they brought this up sometime last week. they said that phase 1 is when ur brain relaxes, and phase 2 is like when ur muscles relax, and stage 3 is when ur totally relaxed that ur muscles don't move and ur in such a deep sleep that practically nothing can wake u up. thats kinda like when u start dreaming. then in order to wake up, u have to go through those phases, in reverse order. so if u wake up before your body goes through those phases correctly, u'll be STIFF because ur muscles will be in that phase where they are relaxed and won't really respond to anything. then u just have to wait for ur body to "recuperate" (sp?) by finishing going through those phases.
 the phases are not accurate, but the part about ur muscles not responding due to incompletion of the phases is. i'm not the one studying so i can't really explain it well.

It happens to me too. It's called sleep paralysis and it's usually nothing to worry about.
Here's an article about it: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/living/DailyNews/sleepparalysis990411.html
The increased heart rate is probably what blueindian said: a panic attack, caused by the fear of waking up paralyzed.

Luckily I haven't experienced that as of yet.. I seem to "jump" out of bed when the alarm goes off.. I have slept wrong on my arm, making it fall asleep, and when I roll over I have 30lbs of dead weight slam onto my face and bust my lip, blacken my eye and make my nose bleed.. Talk about beating your self up over something eh?? heh..
Rule of thumb: "Try and remember not to roll over right when you wake up just in case your arm is totally asleep. It will save you the pain"

I read the article and found it very interesting. DankNstickY was on the right track with not waking up in the right order, apparently our bodies are paralyed by our brains when we dream so that we don't act our on our dreams. Something sleep-walkers brains don't do? It sounds really freaky and I'm glad it has never happened to me. Although, like kain9i6 my arm falls asleep all the time. This is usually do to the fact that I end up sleeping on my back with arm behind my head. I try not let myself fall asleep like that knowing my arm will go to sleep, but I end up doing it anyway. I can't imagine how worried I would be if I couldn't move my whole body.

ah i've been enlightened... thanks for the informative responses especially the one by Dr. Dank. I guess I should be glad to know that it doesn't cause permanent damage or anything cuz hell that'd be scary.
I guess the scariest thing for me is not the part where I can't move, it's just that my heart starts beating faster and faster until eventually I thought I'm just gonna curl up and die right then and there. Now I dunno if my heart is beating that fast in reality, maybe because of fear, or am I dreaming... Weird, I never thought I'd be asking myself whether something is a dream or reality...
Glad I'm not alone though :D
