i think there's a peeping tom roaming around my neighborhood! i feel sooooo violated. basically, let me describe my apartment complex first. I live on the first floor (bottom floor). My bedroom and bathroom windows face the other building to our complex, so there's a narrow walkway between the two buildings. It's only used for maintenance purposes (wiring, cable, etc). While I in the bathroom brushing my teeth, I heard footsteps outside the window. Mind you, it's 6:30 in the morning, sort of still dark outside. Slow footsteps crunching on the leaves. I was thinking, who the heck would be out there fixing things... but if they were fixing things, the footsteps wouldn't sound so deliberate. I heard it coming closer to my building (my window). My bathroom window is right where the tub is... it's kind of an old building, but to open up the window, I have to wind it open. It's sort of plex-glass material and all blurry, so it's not like anyone can really see me in the bathroom. Anyhow, I run the water like I usually do before I step into the tub. Finally when it's all heated up, I open the curtain, and i see a shadow of something leaning against the window. I immediately close the curtain... a few seconds later, I hear someone tinker with the bathroom window, trying to get it cracked open. So I said out loud "What the heck do you think you're doing?" Then it stopped. Footsteps some more... and then I called my boyfriend (he lives in the same complex)... I would have opened to window to see if I could spot the guy, but I was freaking scared...
I feel soooooo violated right now... and paranoid... What can I do???

I'd call the apartment manager.
Ask if for some reason they had someone out there fixing something or whatever.
If they say yes, then tell them you felt uncomfortable and that the person needs to be more careful about how they work.
If they say no, then tell them someone was hanging around by your window. That way, they can have security (if you have any there) keep an eye out. If they don't have security in the complex, they may advise you to call the police.

our apartment manager recently quit b/c the owners of the buildings are horrible and incompetent. the manager was really good to us. but as of now, we have no manager. :( that would have been the first thing i would have done--contacted him.

Sorry Creampuff.. wrong window, I was looking for the crossdressing grandpa.. I think he was the next window down..
No seriously, I would let the guy come and have another look.. but this time, have your boyfriend standing by the front door with a tazer.. then you signal your boyfriend when the guy is there and then he creeps outside behind the guy and tazes him in the nutts.. =0)
That hurts..
Trust me.. i know.. why do you think I don't peep anymore.
(Shifts uncomfortably in his seat and 'adjusts')
still doesn't feel right.

that's a good idea--the tazer one. for some reason, if this happened to someone else, i'd be less fearful and more confrontational. but because it happened to me, i'm more scared to confront this guy.

You can always call the cops and report a suspected peeping tom. For all you know, they might have had a rash of them in the neighborhood, and this time, since he tried to jimmy the window, there might be fingerprints. Plus, if it just happened they can always fingerprint the outside of the window...where you prints wouldnt be.
On a side note, you never know...it could have been your boyfriend trying to be sly about getting a peek. Even assuming that he could get a better view from the inside...some people get a thrill from just peeking in.:D

Get a shotgun. Put a sign on your window that says, "beware of my 12 gauge." It sends a message.

This was my next suggestion, since you don't have an apartment manager right now. :)
Go ahead and call. If nothing else, it will be on record. :)
Good luck and let us know if you see him again.

first of all, BRAIN, it wasn't me...
secondly, not to freak you out or anything, but you know how the LA County sherriff's dept. recently made available to the public that search engine for sex offenders? well, i did a search on the neighborhood, and there's actually a sex offender who lives literally across the street from us. now, as far as what he/she may have been charged with, it doesn't tell you that unless you actually go to the sherriff's office to check.
within a one mile radius from where we live, there are 42 sex offenders. isn't that a pleasant thought?

You're that one offender aren't you? At any rate, it is pretty creepy knowing that there are quite a few sickos within a 1 mile radius. What's that website Freelance?
