Well I've answered twice to this same question, try a search forgot where it was that ended up having good prices.

you have a few things to consider, price and support. if you know your way around computers and think you can support your own laptop during some software upgrade, go for a non-name brand card. go to fry's and you'll see a bunch of them for sale.

then again, if you just found out that ethernet and phone lines use different wires, you may want to stick to a name brand card (ie. 3com, netgear, kingston) you'll pay a little extra, but you won't have to worry about updating drivers or any support if you don't know how to set it up.

Do you have any suggestions for a desktop as well then? I am planning to build one in the next couple weeks... any good deals on P3 700+ MHz?

Thanks

I prefer D-Link ethernet NICs, about $15 each at CompUSA. They are no frills cards and do the job adequately. I've had a card for 2+ years now and it's still working fine. I did have a D-Link 8 port ethernet hub also for about 2+ years and only cost me about $25. It overheated on me, not sure if its my fault or not.

The 3Com Xjack units are nice. 10/100, v.90, no dongle. You can get a single unit direct for $99 here until 8/31/00.

If your looking for a cheap card but good quality, go to www.computer123.com (http://www.computer123.com) , they have the Encore Ethernet cards which have the Realtek 8029 chipset.

If you want a name brand one with 10/100 and a modem, go to www.centrix-intl.com (http://www.centrix-intl.com)
They're around 100 bucks there.

Follow the link dgoldblatt posted. It will take you to a promotional deal on 3com's latest and greatest PCMCIA nic/modem combo card for only $99. You can't beat that deal if you need both a nic and a modem. If you only need a nic, you can probably save a few bucks, but only a few. I have one of these and it rocks. The 2 for $40 intel nic deal is for PCI nics to go in your desktop. I have a couple of those too, and they work fine.

Good luck,

Desktop NIC's... stick with 3com. Some people hate 'em, but I swear by 'em. Best support, and some of the FASTEST 10/100 cards I've ever seen.

Realtek chipset based cards go for 5-15 dollars for 10/100 cards. Fry's has dlink cards pretty cheap, but a tech at Hilton said they are damn slow. I have a Netgear switch I got a fry's ($99) that works great, its on 24/7, heats up, but pretty stable overall with PFS programs running on several comps---8 months so far with no problems.
