Hey, anyone know if an Airport card will work with any 802.11 base station, or does it have to be the Airport base station?

Should work just fine with any 802.11 station. :)

the airport card is just an apple branded 802.11b card. It should work with every 802.11b access point as long as it conforms to the 802.11b standards

It works for us in our office using a D-Link access point and I know it works at my friend's house with a wireless Linksys router. Neither one even needed configuring at the base station.

Okay, good. Now, is it worth it to get the 700mhz iBook, or is the 600 sufficent?

I would get the 700MHz just for the Combo Drive. But then again I'd probably also go for the 14.1" version anyway. :)

Nah, the combo drive isn't worth it to me. I have an external firewire CD-RW, I'm just interested in knowing if the speed difference is noticeable.

My thoughts were just that without getting the Combo drive, you're stuck without a DVD player. For me that would make a big difference in a laptop, but if that doesn't float your boat then that's up to you :). Note that you can get a DVD player as a custom built option, but it doesn't seem worth the price to me when for $250 more you can have a portable CD-RW and an extra 100MHz.

So what are you going to do with the laptop? I mean if it's mostly for surfing the net, e-mail, and word processing than the 600MHz is going to be fine. If you plan on doing a/v or design, the 700MHz model is your machine.

i would personally go with a 700 MHz. I dont like portable burners because they allow for ease coaster making if you bump it hard enough while its burning (i found this out by brning a cd while driving down the express way :D)

the 100 MHz is 1/6th more machine. It may not be that notciable, but when using an app like photoshop or something else memory intensive, it will be noticable.

I dont like the larger screen because the laptop starts to approach the size & weight of a windows system. The extra screen is nice, but to me it isnt really worth it.

As a side note, I am typing this on our new dual 1.25 GHz G4 :D

The custom option only raises the price $50, so it's not that big of a deal. I just would like to have $$ leftover to setup wireless...

I want to play with Jaguar so badly... too bad my old beige g3 is just not up to par to run the latest and greatest MacOS.

the beige powermacs are supported.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html

it may not be the fastest implementation, but it should be able to run it. I have a copy running on a 300 MHz beige G3. It isnt anything great, but it works.

Just remember to update your firmware before installing
