Looking to buy a Bose Sound System. Lifestyle series, but $1200 seems steep. Anyone have any help?
Thanks.
Sorry, just read the message from Apex, tried to Edit message header, couldn't, so bring on the damage. I accept my stupidity.

Forget Bose and their high price. JBL makes a GREAT speaker system similiar to the Bose and in my opinion, sounds better, as well as a better price, $400 - $600.

I bought the stand alone unit ( the one without the CD player) a few years back directly from Bose and it sounds awesome. I don't believe that anyone sells their units discounted. You could try EBay, though.

Why on earth would you want to buy a Bose system?
Talk about mediocre product at premium price. Even though Recaton is an evil company, I recommend buying NHT speakers. You can get pretty good deals for NHTs on eBay.

My father owns a stereo store and in the 20 years he has been in business I have never heard him say a good thing about bose. Look into MB Quart and, as bkrank said. JBL's. They will probably both cost less and sound way better. Also if you are looking for a tuner or cd player or anything like that, check out pioneer and Harmon Kardon.

"No lows, no highs, must be Bose"
I forgot who coined that phrase.
If you want something that's small, look into the Energy Take 5 Series. Good Guys should have it on demo.

I would definitely agree with these guys in saying that Bose is not all that great. Their product sounds pretty decent, but at the price, you can get stuff that sounds much better. I have always thought Bose has spent too much time making their speakers 1mm x 3mm and not enough time making them sound good.
I recently bought a pair of Infinity rs-4s from Circuit City (they are a '99 model, so CC should have them discounted) for about $280. I also bought an Onkyo Dolby Digital (474 model) receiver for $250 and that came with a $50 pair of sony speakers which work fine for surround (surround speakers don't do much, they don't need to be really expensive)
Lastly, i bought a BIC VS67 (i think) center channel for $130. So, my total surround system was like $710 and I know for a fact that it sounds better than any Bose system at twice that price...read reviews on everything that you buy--that is how I made my choices.
Hope that was at least a little helpful. If you want the tiny little speakers, I would agree that you should get an energy 5 system.

No love for Bose here either.
If you're looking into packaged Home Theater speaker sets (Bose Lifestyle, Energy Take5/Encore), I suggest waiting for Paradigm's Home Cinema series. Given Paradigm's history of producing the best bang-for-the-buck speakers, I think these are going to be awesome. I vaguely remember that Paradigm was going to start shipping around the end of summer but I'm not sure if I read that somewhere or just dreamed it.
