Although I usually shy away from Hollywood when they attempt to steal movie scripts from other countries and convert them into Americanized versions with little or no credit given to the original, I had to watch this one (I was going with a group of friends). Now, though, I really want to go out and watch the orignal, even though I'm fairly sure that the storyline will be extremely similar... most Hollywood writers these days lack the skill to write a story anywhere near this good.
Anyway, my take on it is this: If you scare easily (and like to be scared), go see it. Even if you don't scare easily, you can still get a lot out of the movie. Some of the footage is very reminiscient of Dali and Buñuel, and the ending is very good, imo.

Oh, and on a side note, I would still probably try to support the original more...even though I haven't seen it: Hollywood needs to start learning how to write their own scripts for a change. :2far:

Heh, from the title, I thought you weren't going to like it!
I'm glad it's good, tho, I wanna see this.

ooooh, dali and bunuel? had no idea, but now i'm excited... i'm watching it tonight...
as far as the original, i heard from someone who saw it, and he said although the story was, in actuality, better in the original, the overall movie was better in the american version. i know, it's vague...

Is this the "Ring" movie with the cursed video tape and the phone calls and such? Well, if so, I've seen the japanese original. I didn't know it was being remade in the states since I don't live over there. I can't comment on how well the remake is done since I haven't seen it, but one thing I can say is that if it's anything like the original it's gonna be a whole different kind of horror that most people are used to seeing in the theatres. It won't have the cheap jump-out-of-your-seat kind of moments like most hollywood horror flicks today. Many of the scenes contain supernatural content which are very unlikely to happen in real life, yet it still manages to create a terrifying atmosphere which lingers with you long after the movie is over. I can't guarantee on the quality of the remake, but if it's anything near the original, it will definitely be worth checking out. However, I must admit it won't have the same effect on everyone.
edit:
lmao...just check some of the reviews. Most of them are good, but here's one of the thumbs-downs:
[FYI: the movie features phone calls that tell you that you will die in a week]
"the phone rings and a voice tells you you've got seven days left to live. Then you get another phone call warning you that if the video isn't back at Blockbuster before midnight, you're going to face frightening late fees. O.K., not really."

I saw the movie on Friday night. I thought it was really good, and pretty scary as well. My lady had her head buried in my shoulder quite a few times, and the big rowdy crowd was held in check for the whole movie. Arkistan, there are several parts that make you "jump out of your seat".
Thumbs up

Yeah, I figured it would atleast be a decent movie since it's from Dreamworks. Haven't seen it yet though....
Pretty decent movie. I don't get scared easily so the first part was just your regular Hollywood type flick except for the pretty cool footage in the video and such like that. The ending really made the movie for me. Totally wasn't expecting that. I even managed to laugh really hard in the movie once (horse on ferry)

just saw it too...
story is predictable, altho the ending is unexpected (not quite a "twist" or "surprise" ending, but unexpected nonetheless)...
but they did a good job with the suspense factor...
personally, i'd recommend watching it at home with just a few people, as opposed to watching it in a theater with a bunch of jerk-offs (i tend to hate large movie theater crowds)... at least then, you might catch the full effect; there are a couple of freaky moments...
i usually don't go for the cheesy loud noise/flashing image-make-you-jump stuff in movies like this, but, like i said, i think the director played with the suspense pretty well, so the expectation of the jump is more frightening than the actual jump...
not a bad flick... but yeah, i'd say it's a rental... you don't absolutely have to watch in the theater...

I REALLY liked this movie, saw it opening weekend and yes, I am still alive after seven days. But to be honest, now I'm a little bummed to know it was a remake...I actually thought we had an original movie for a moment there!
Well whether Americans wrote the script or the Japanese, it doesn't matter...someone originally had this really cool idea for a script and it has managed to scare me pretty darn well.
I have a friend who practically hated the movie, but I hate his taste in movies...I mean, he has NO taste. But for the most part everyone I talk to loved it because of it's orignal and CREEPY nature! Even if you don't like scary movies, suck it up and see it because it's unlike any movie I have ever seen and I've seen PLENTY! Honestly, the critics were right when they said it's the scariest movie since The Exorcist. Now of course, I didn't think that movie was very scary, but for that time...the Exorcist was pretty creepy.
So enough said. GO SEE IT!
