Can I stick a 60mm case fan onto my stock heatsink from AMD?

It all depends on how much cfm's it pushes. If it equals or does more than the stock amd fan, then yep its safe. But if it doesn't, might wanna be careful. It could work fine depending on the speed of your cpu.

I guess I better not, cause I was just trying to find a quieter fan, but I'm not exactly sure how much air the stock one moves, and most "quiet" 60 mm fans move about 12 CFM which seems like it might be a tad low for the 1400 Athlon.

the old saying less is more doesn't work with CPU fans very well. I always go faster when I want more cooling.
You can find some good quiet fans that push alot of air.

If you want quieter go BIGGER!!! Hehe, I have an 80mm fan cooling my cpu, nice and quiet. . . well not as quiet as I would like but still a lot better than a screaming 60mm.
