BEIJING (Reuters) - Two animal rights activists wearing nothing but a protest banner and underwear shouted anti-fur slogans on Beijing's most bustling shopping street on Wednesday before being pushed into a police van and hauled off.
"Compassion is the fashion. Fur is dead!" chanted Kayla Worden and Yvonne Taylor as they strutted into a small plaza in front of a shopping mall and shimmied out of their red silk robes.
The two high heel-wearing blondes, covered only with a white banner around their torsos that read "We'd rather go naked than wear fur" in Chinese and English, quickly attracted a crowd of 50 to 100 gawking onlookers.
"We are really cold out here, but this is nothing compared to what the animals go through," said Worden, a nurse from New York as Taylor, who works at a dog and cat shelter in London, waved to the gathering crowd.
The temperature in Beijing on Wednesday was forecast to rise to a maximum 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
The two women are members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which says the fur trade is cruel and unnecessary and has long campaigned to abolish it. A PETA spokesman said the protest was timed ahead of a fur show in Beijing on Friday.
"Cruelty is never in fashion and we want people to think twice before they buy fur," Taylor said during the brief protest.
Police tried to disperse the crowd and told Worden and Taylor to put on their robes and leave.
The women, who appeared not to understand Chinese, were nudged into a van and driven away after they continued to smile and wave and shout slogans.
Onlookers were amused by the small protest, which took place near Tiananmen Square where student-led pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989 were brutally crushed by the army.
"I've never heard of anything like this happening in China before," said Lee Bai, who was passing by on a bicycle.
Another man focused his attention on the women rather than their cause, saying in heavily accented English: "So beautiful!"
Let the idiots freeze. And someone put a bag over those heads.

why are they idiots? because they actually stand up for something they believe?

Actually, they probably aren't wearing leather shoes. There are lots a leather alternatives out there. I have a pair of Doc Martins that are made from a material called vegetin. Look like leather. (On a side note, they suck. Not because of the material, but because of the company that makes them for DM. They just don't fit like my leather docs.)
Plus, who cares if they are wearing leather. They are protesting FUR. The simple fact of the matter is that minks and other "fur animail" are raised, with rare exception, strictly for their skin. at least people eat cows and pigs. minks have it bad..they live their lives in shoe boxes.
i think PETA goes to the extreme on a lot of issues, hence the reason I'm not a memeber. but i do believe in a lot of things they stand for.
that saide, here's a much better photo of a PETA chic

of course! the most effective argument tactic here on apex is to call people we disagree with idiots
however, i think that it wasn't the smartest idea. i mean, why send someone from NYC and London to china just to strip down and protest fur. it seems like there are a lot more effective ways to try to encourage people not to wear fur.

No no, you really need to admire the intelligence for two fairly unknown white women to cruise all the way around the world to a fairly suppressive communist country to protest the use of fur. I mean, when I think about protesting fur, going to a country known for HUMAN rights violations and losing people in prison is the first damn place on my list.

not to mention that the local chinese don't really understand english...
now, if they could speak chinese and say in chinese "Hey, we're idiots! Come and join us!"...well, that may have been a lot more effective :P
Horay for fur, Horay for meat, and horay for trappers.
I'm sick of these Peta people. If they don't wanna buy fur, fine. What bugs me is the way that they try to change laws. They wanna cram thier values down everyone elses throats. Their goal is to make everyone a vegitarian. I swear. Sure they go after trappers first, cause prevailing public opinion against leg-hold traps. Next it will be hunters, then fishers, then slaughterhouses and buchers. Eventually eating meat will be illegal. That's why everyday people have to stand up for trappers and fur, they're coming for YOU eventually.
They're working here in BC against the spring grizzly bear hunt, and they managed to get the black bear hunt in Ontario canceled. Again, bears first, cause they're so cute, and they aren't really thought of as food animals. Next it will be whitetail deer, and then the slighly uglier mule deer. They already had that "Don't Fish Day".
If they wanted to do some good, join something like Amnesty International, and fight human rights violations.

I don't mind them protesting here, where you have a right, but if I don't want anything to do, don't get in my way. I have no problem buying meat and eating in front of your salad eating butt.

i agree that PETA folks do some outrageous and downright annoying things. however, they do accomplish some good things like:
they got McDonalds to start buying eggs from farmers that treat the chickens fairly decently. i don't know if yall are aware, but most hens get raised in these things called battery cages where like 6 six hens have to share 3 cubic feet of space. somtimes there feet actually grow around the wires of the cages. and they crap and pee all over each other.
they maintain a list of companies that test their products on animals. i like to check the list before i buy any new cosmetics or cleaners and stuff. there is no longer any need to test cosemtics and cleaners on animals, we have far more accurate tests that can be done with human cells and computer models. and the animal tests are sooooooo cruel. like the Draize eye test where they drop the individual chemicals that make up a prodcut into the eys of rabbits to see what happens.
i just wish they wouldn't be so crazy. gives more moderate animal lovers a bad name.

:stupid: I kind of like life at the top of the food chain. You may love animals but they are food. Watch the Discovery Channel and you'll see - everything eats something else. Animals are a natural resource and as such I have no problems with anyone harvesting them.
Full Disclosure - I don't own any fur coats or anything else nor have I ever purchased any. But my BMW does have a nice leather interior and I enjoy a good steak dinner every now and again.
