OK...one mod that I have been wanting to make for a long time (and expecting someone that mods cases professionally to beat me to) is an LED bus. I want a small panel of LEDs (like found on old external modems) that displays:
Power on
HD activity
CD activity
CDRW activity
Network activity
Network 100 Mbps on
Below fan speed threshold
Above temp threshold

I figured my first step was to kill an old external modem and then hook up voltage and current probes to the LEDs as they currently exist. The reason I have not done this yet (besides time requirements) is I don't know how my netcard / CDRW will act if I siphon off some voltage to power a second set of LEDs.

Any Ideas?

the power on, hd activity and network stuff should be easy. for the network ones, just cut off the existing leds from your nic and reconnect it with an extention wire. i would put in a connector of some kind to make it easier to connect and disconnect.

i would do the same for the cd drives as well and i plan to so something just like that soon. after i get my new case i plan to remove the leds from my optical drives and put a new "stealth" type bezel on the front.

dont have any ideas for the temp and fan alerts

Hmm if you're proficient with electronics, you can use optoisolators and drive the LED circuit with it along with its own power source. That way you aren't leeching amps from the drives etc.

Btw, when you do figure out how to use optoisolators, tell me :P
