Man I am so stressed out right now. By the way I don't know if this is the eight board or not but I didn't feel like posting it in off topic. So I will unload this onto you guys. I am going to be attending school Dec. 8th, I have to get insurance for my car and I don't have a job yet.... I started out applying at places like Circuit City and Best Buy and they wasted my time. I had myself convinced that Circuit City was going to hire me and I wasted 2 months. So now I am down to applying at places like Taco Bell, Del Taco, In-N-Out Burger, and places like that. And still I am not getting any phone calls.... I always figured getting a job at these places would be easy but it's not, atleast for me... Plus I have no work history so maybe they don't want to hire me for that. It's killing me though because now all I can think of is that damn date... Dec. 8th...

What kind of school are you going to be attending in December? Is it college? If so, once you are enrolled in a school, it usually becomes very easy to find a job, because school's are usually willing to hire their own students. Now these jobs might only be part-time, but they can still do a lot for you.
On another note, the job market out there really sucks right now. I have several friends with very strong work histories and a 4-year college degree to back them, and they are lucky to be getting part-time jobs at Barnes & Noble and the like.

What kind of school are you going to be attending in December?
I'll be attending an automotive school to become a BMW technician. After the first 7 months of school I'll be qualified enough to work at a place like Meinekee, places that do brakes and so forth...
how aobut going through a temp agency?
I've thought about a job placement agency but those charge you money and I'm broke...
Good luck SonyGuy! I'll be thinking about you.
Thanks Jenny:)

Also, a lot of temp agencies require actual work history. I was told that a 4-year degree didn't mean anything, but if I had a year of office experience, they could place me right away.
Oh, and SonyGuy, temp agencies usually take their cut out of your wages, so it shouldn't cost you anything to go to them initially.

Well that's cool that they do that instead of charging you right off the bat. You are right though the job market sucks here.... I hate it when someone calls me in for an interview and then they act interested, then they just say, "Well, actually Tim what we are looking for is someone to fill a position a couple of months from now for the holidays". I want to knock their ass out right there when they say that because I am not looking for a job 2 months from now, I am looking for a job now!! Insurance alone for 6 months on my car will be $518 and I probably won't make that in time so it looks like I will be riding BART and then that will be pretty expensive so I'm looking at a few months to get enough money for insurance. *Sigh*... sucks.

SonyGuy, you want a couple of tips to getting a job you want. First Look like you watn the job, doesn't matter if it's McD's or Polo. Dress nice collared shirt, tie, dress pants, dress shoes, no sneakers. Have I started to sound like someones parents yet? If you want to get the job, after you have turned in your applicatied (about two to three days) give the place you applied at a call and don't wait for them to call you. If you want the job you have to show the iniative and put forth the effort.

Yeah, I finally got a response this last Friday. The woman that will be in charge of hiring gave me her phone #, so I'm going to give her a call first thing tomorrow morning. It is as much about the follow up as it is the first impression.
Oh, and good luck, man.

So how did it go, for you? Get any interviews?

Called and talked to the manager of Jack-In-the-Box, then filled out a questionaire at the store because I guess you always have to fill those things out there. I don't know if they will hire me or not. I really hope so because I need a freaking job... Also picked up and application at, ugh, Wal-Mart since it was close by... Tomorrow I'm calling Togo's since their manager was off today. Going to get some more applications as well. That's pretty much all that's happened.

Try to angle for Wal-Fart, I hear that they pay pretty well comparitively. They also have manditory drug screening. I hate wal mart but hey money is money

Is mandatory drug screening a good thing?

Oh, I wasn't meaning to be sarcastic or anything. I don't have a problem with drug screens because I don't do drugs. I just didn't know what Snigle meant by that, but now that I am actually thinking with some damn sense then duh.... Ok it's required I get it. For some reason at first I took that as being that they immediately test you for drugs. Don't ask:rolleyes:

Oh speaking of drug tests check this out... I went to Circuit City's website because I wanted to contact them about my employment adventure with their store over in Concord. They have this system setup where they won't give you their e-mail address, you have to submit a "form". You know you type your comments in the box so I went ahead. Here's what I wrote...
I applied over 2 months ago to your store in Concord California.
They had me come in for an interview and that went well. Then they needed me to take a drug test so I took it and I was told that would take 3 days. I called them 3 days later and they said they hadn't heard anything. In all over the past 2 months I have called them probably 15 times and they tell me the same thing everytime, they haven't heard anything from their Corporate Head Quarters. I assumed they were doing a background check but those only take about 3 weeks and I have a clean background. I really wanted this job at Circuit City. I am experienced with electronics and I felt I was qualified for the job but I don't know what else to do since they tell me the same thing everytime I call.
So today(A day later) I got a response from someone and this si what it said....
Dear ##########:
Thank you for visiting circuitcity.com. I apologize for any inconvenience
you may have encountered. I recommend either contacting Corporate
Headquarters, at (804) 527-4000 or the Store Manager at the Concord,
California store. Someone will be able to help you, in depth, with your
situation and offer a possible solution.
Circuit City welcomes the opportunity to assist you with your future
electronics needs. I appreciate that you took the time to contact us and
trust that this information is helpful.
I mean it isn't anything like wow that was so cool, but hey they didn't even have to reply to that because the website basically deals with merchandise questions and comments and not with employment. Just thought I would share that with you guys...

UGH I despise auto generated emails.
The drug testing was just kind of a warning incase drugs do you.
Give the store manager a call maybe they will hire you. Gotta be better than working in a fast food joint, no offense to anyone who works in one.
Here's a nickle's worth of free advice.
Anytime you talk to an adult, figure out a way to let them know you are looking for a job. Relitives, friend's parents and parent's friends are a great way to network. You never know if thier company is hiring, and you have a much better shot at getting the job.
My company put an ad in the paper for a "recent grad" type job and got 200 resumes.

Hey guys got another update for ya. I went to my interview this morning at Wal-Mart and it went well! The supervisor was extremely friendly and I asked her the likely hood of me being hired and she said "Oh they'll hire ya, but I didn't say that...". So then I had to fill out the dredded questionaire, and she scheduled me for my second interview. Monday at 10:30. I'm excited! Wish me luck!:)

WELL?
I GOT THE JOB!!:D I went in for my second interview today and they handed me a drug screen form and I went and did the drug test today. They told me that Wal-Mart would get the results within 24 hours and Wal-Mart also called me today to see if I had taken it yet and then they told me orientation was Wednesday&Thursday from 9am-5pm both days. So.... There ya have it. Woohoo! May not be the best job there is but I sure as hell am glad it's not a fast food place. Oh yeah, it pays $7.25 30-34 hrs per week....:)

Tell them that your primary contact is through email. Or get one of the newer dialup modems that still allows calls to go through.

Well I try to stay off as much as possible during the day. I probably won't be working at Wal-Mart for even a year. The auto tech school I will be attending has a job placement program to help me start working at a shop. Something like Meinekee...

Hey guys had my first day of orientation today. I clocked in 7 hours today and will do another 7 tomorrow and start work officially on Friday. What I don't get is this... Ok I had marked down my availability as 3pm-12am and total weekly hours of 30-34 hours. They gave me my schedule today and here's what it says...
Nov. 9th(Sat)- work from 3pm-12am
Nov. 10th(Sun)- work from 3pm-12am
Nov. 11th(Mon)- work from 12pm-9pm
Nov. 12th(Tues)- work from 12pm-9pm
Nov. 13th(Wed)- work from 3pm-12am
Nov. 14th- Off
Nov. 15th- Off
I'm not complaining or anything because I need all the hours I can get but that looks like more than 34 hours in a week which is the maximum hours I wrote down and I also wrote down I could work a max of like 6 hours a day. This is my first job so I don't want to sound stupid by asking you guys or anything but what is up with this?

It sounds to me like they really need someone during those hours, and they are hoping that you will be that person.

Well I was thinking to myself "Damn I need to work a lot of hours this month, I wonder if they can give me more" and sure enough they did. The only reason I want more hours is I have about 1 month before I start school and I need to work my ass off to get some insurance for my car and so forth. Ya know?:)
Snigle
11-08-2002, 10:50 PM
heh Whatever you do don't ask for more hours and then go back to them and say I have too many hours. Pisses management off something awful...hmmm then again it is Wal-Mart. If you put down on your application that you couldn't work more than 6 hours a day then don't be affraid to remind them. espically after you start school :D anyhting that you want management to remember, write it down for them, or they will "forget" that they were told
oh ya CONGRATS on getting your first job :thumb:
