I'm in the process of building a system. $<1000. (im a poor puke with 3 hungery kids) I'm looking for a quality monitor at about $500. I currently have a blurry 19" crt.

There are so many monitors out there and so few reviews. I could use some help finding the biggest and the best. Finding the lowest price is easy, finding deals I just need to read here.

I do not want some fish tank, bubbled, blurry CRT that is packadged with a budget computer. What is out there? What to avoid? I spend 2- 6 hours a day on CPU reading text, and I also like to game.

Your ideas would be great.

check out the Deals Page (http://www.gotapex.com/deals.php)

from deals page
You can get a 21" NEC AccuSync 120 for $367.96 shipped, a Sony E540/B 21" Trinitron for $417.56 shipped (lowest price available for a non-refurbished model).

im using the sony e540 right now and i love it. i actually bought it from dell through GA as well and got an insane deal on it

I bought a 19 inch Samsung 955df from Best Buy and I bought it for under 350. It does 1600x1200 and has .23 dot pitch. It's a nice monitor.

But You could probably swing a LCD for around the price you are looking at. Look at the deals page, I'm sure there are some on there, presumeably from Dellhell :D

I picked my Dell p1110 sony ultra scan 21inch monitor off of uBid for 155 (+85 shipping) 240 total.. I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever and it looks great.. Only problem is you will be taking a chance on a refurb, and some people have had some horror stories on refurbs.. I just happened to be one of the lucky ones..

But, if refurb isn't they way you want to go, definately check out the deals they have here.. They get some doozies at least once a month.. and remember that "patience is a virtue".. but patience might save ya some bux too.. heh

It was for a dell 21" refurb. It included pin stripes, the horizontal kind. 2 right across the center. Only positive note, Ubid paid to ship it back, and refunded all my $$$. I lost nothing but time. Can you bill them for that?

That sounds like a Trinitron monitor, and they all have those. If you don't like them, I'd suggest getting a CRT from Viewsonic or even KDS. Another good option for a nice CRT is from www.iiyamadirect.com (http://www.iiyamadirect.com) . They have really good monitors for a decent price.

ifr you spend that long everyday reading text, a lcd monitor would definetly be easier on the eyes. I was on a 19" trinitron before, which was good, but a lcd definatly has reduced eye strain

Are they worth it? Eye strain is an issue. (i'm sure all of us know about the eye strain headache.) I was thinking a quality CTR would be the alternative. I know LCD is the rave, but are they that much better. Please consider that I online game now and then. Would blurring be an issue? I think there are a few 17" LCD's <$500. Would a cheap LCD be and good and a quality 21" CRT? Image quality is key. I could care less about power compsumption, or footprints.

Would you choose a Good 21" CRT or a cheap 17" LCD?

Where do you live? If at all possible, what you should do is check around at different stores that put up a monitor display, because you could then see the differences for yourself. Since you are on a budget, I would not recommend LCD monitors: the lower-end LCDs will be more blurry and have less contrast than their CRT counterparts. Personally, after looking at the monitor display at Fry's, I wouldn't buy any of the LCDs that are listed for under $1,000. So, given the choice above, I'd choose the 21" CRT any day.

If you see some fool looking and nothing... that will be me. I'll compare 21" CRT's vs. 17" LCD's. I hope the selection is good. TKS 4 help. Anyone want to donate a few bucks to help out a poor slob?

Eh...that's not a very good idea. At most stores, they use a device to split up the video signal across the entire shelf of monitors so the picture on all of them are no where near as good as they would be when hooked up on your home system.

Does this affect the LCDs more than the CRTs? Because there is still a significant difference. Of course, that might be the reason why Mac monitors look so much better than the rest.
