Do CDRs really suck this bad now?

I have been living off of two 50-disc spools of TDK 32Xs for about six months now, and I ran out last week.

I ordered a 100-disc spool of 40X Philips CDRs from staples.com. Got them today-the first three that I burned (two at 32X, one at 40X) were instant coasters-only one could be read-by my LiteOn CDRW!

I took the spool to my BM staples and they exchanged it for a Memorex 40X spool. Having tried to burn two discs (in the past 20 mins) at 32X-and both of those don't work in my CDRoms!! The CDs are a Sony 52X and a Samsung 48X.

So, is it just my dumb luck, or has CDR quality shot down the pooper in recent months?

that sucks man, what kind of discs are they? check the ATIP for the manufacturer and dye. id also suggest that you use tdk's. although i rarely buy them due to price, most that ive seen are taiyo yudens, arguably the best cdr's in the market

I took the Memorex back to staples and bought some (more expensive) sonys that appear to work well. Man...bad taste in my mouth-I've never had CDRs be that bad before. If the package says 40X-they should burn at 40X (or 32X at the worst) I have never had one of my TDKs go bad on me. If I could find a good deal on them, I would have bought them first.

I bought two spools of IMATION CDRs a while back and fewer than 50% of them would burn at all, and out of the ones that did most of them failed after a short time. It was too late to bring them back when I started finding this out, so I wrote to IMATION. All they would give me was two coupons for free replacement spools of the same discs. Started having the same problem with those, so I chucked them and gave up on IMATION forever.

Sometimes you just get bad batches I guess.

ive been living off of a 50 pack of Fuji Film CDRs (32x) and just got a 100 pack of Generic CDRs, ive burned about 75 cdrs, and only bout 2 have become coasters. i think its just bad luck at the time :bandit:

edit: and im using a 40x lite on cdr and a 16x dvd samsung

I had exactly the same issue with Imation CDRs, and I got a similar response from their Customer Service department.

The difference was that I sent back the remaining 42 CDRs of the pack I opened, and they sent back a new spool of 50 (different manufacturer, it appears) and an additional 20 CDRs in jewel boxes.

My "coaster" rate is lower than it was, but I'm not using these things for anything critical. Some of the music CDs I've burned on Imation discs won't play in my daughter's Discman, which plays pretty much any other brand.

I'm sticking with the Microboards/Taiyo-Yudens that go on sale at Guitar Center every so often.

A friend of mine who has a software business claims that Mitsui discs are the best. Of all the reviews I have read, it appears he may be right. However, they are very expensive. But he buys them in 50,000 unit shipments and he only pays a penny a piece. Man, I am tempted to ask him to get me a thousand or so at that price.

Could it be the burners rather than the CDRs? I have a plextor and I haven't had a coaster in a while...

I'm just curious about this.

i have a plextor and i burn at 40x and i havent gotten a coaster ever ... btw i use imation cdrs

Could be the burners. I have two Lite-Ons (different model numbers and speeds) and the problem has happened with both.

Come to think of it, I had the Imation problem with my old Memorex 1622, too.

I have been using FujiFilm disks for 2 yrs and never had one go bad. I have tried several Memorex, Pine, Imation and IBM all of which I have had problems.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the main reason why the others have fail was becasue I could see through the CD-R. They all had various coatings on top but most when held top side to the light I could everything, the top, the light etc.

Laser not sensing the writing surface properly, anyone have any other ideas?

I would like to buy a few CD-R's for a penny each as well!!!

It's possible but unlikely. I have NEVER had a CDR burn completely, and then not be able to read in a CDRom with my past Lite-On:TDK combos. I've been using TDKs (at various speeds) in both my Lite-Ons for more than a year-and no coasters.

Believe me, that thought has entered my mind. The next time I see him I am going to see what the qualifications are to buy them at that price. I would even be willing to pay the $500 to buy all 50,000 of them and resell them.

Hey no one hasn't even considered the software? I used to use EZ CD Creator, but always wound up with coasters unless I burned @ 2X. I've been using Nero and have no problems @ 24X no matter the CD-R brand!

I have been using Easy CD at 24X with my HP and Plextor burners with Fuji CD-R for almost a year and not one coaster.

i'm running nero 5.5.5.6 with a CenDyne 32x burner (made my lite-on).

i have a bunch of CompUSA, Pengo (it came free with a CD case), and Imation media. it's burned at 24x-32x, even though the media is only rated at 12x-16x (i bought it all awhile ago when all i had was a 2x USB burner).

anyway, i have NEVER burned a coaster with this setup out of at least 100 discs. so i dunno. it's fine for me :shrug:

I was waiting for a topic like this.

I recently purchased some Mitsumi media rated at 1-48x (50-pack spindle). After my LiteOn LTR-48125W (48/12/48) would only burn them at 40x, I did some research and found out that they are the same discs as a generic 40x-rated spindle I've found (gotta love the ATIP information).

If I had batteries in my digicam right now, I'd post pics of the exact discs I'm referring to.
