The Sony DRU-500A reduces your odds of getting format remorse: It writes to DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R; and it's the only rewritable DVD drive in our review that can use 4X DVD-R media. It's also a speedy CD-RW drive (at 24X CD-R and 10X CD-RW), and it retails for only $349--less than a number of the single-format drives. As a result, it won our Best Buy award without a serious challenge.

I found this burner for $319 at Bestbuy the other day....only thing is that it was an open box unit. I held off of it, but it was tempting.

PCWorld is kind of like the Road&Track of computer magazines.
SAT flashback...
PC World is to PC Magazine
just as
Road&Track is to Car & Driver.
Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Or am I just babbling?
Dave.

does that mean they're good or not?
The sony drive looks nice although i'd be happy with a 4x DVD-R drive. No way i'm paying for +RW media. I just wish the drives were upgradable to the eventual standard through firmware or other means, kinda like the modems in the whole 56k standards war.

The sony is a good drive, though a little touchy sometimes with -R discs, that's due to software not readying the Sony correctly.
To be fair too, +RW media really isn't that much more expensive. None of it is cheap, but at least you can reuse RW and I haven't noticed any real speed loss in doing so.

ok just hod long does it take to burn a DVD?

4x dvd is actually really fast for the amount of data you are burning. You figure a dvd had 4.27 gigs about a cd has 800 megs. So thats 5.33 times more. So you figure that a 4x dvd burner is like 21.3x in cd burning.
7-10 minutes, but formating a DVD-RW disc takes an hour and a half.
Speeds are on this page of the review.

Sorry... I just think that Road&Track is kind of fluffy compared to Car & Driver.
I feel the same way about the PC magazines.
PCWorld is fine if I'm in the dentist's office, but I do not like it as much as PCMagazine. PCWorld just seemed to cater more-so to the non-computer-nerds... and I don't like that in a computer magazine. I like my computer magazines like I like my women... "thick and black?" you say? Surprisingly enough, no. I like them filled with as much geeky information as possible.
Am I in a goofy mood tonight or what?
That being said, I haven't read PC World in a while... maybe I'd like it now... who knows?
Go Car & Driver! :P
Ok, enough of that.
DVD Burner for under $300? Cool! It doesn't seem long before they'll be sub-$200, eh? I'm really surprized at how much they've come down in price. Technologically it might not be such a huge step, but to me the difference between burning CDs and being able to burn DVDs seems huge! Forgive me for stating the obvious.
Can't wait 'till the discs are sub-$1. That's going to be AWESOME.
Dave.

Hmmmm.... I have never read that one (so my sarcasmeter is ineffective). Is it really any good?

MaximumPC is a very good magazine. It is geared to the experienced PC builder . Lots of good technical articles and How-to's.
