Really no surprise.
Mercury: Intel’s ranking in graphics market surged in 3Q (http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Article3.asp?datePublish=2002/11/05&pages=04&seq=14) {link with breakdown by various markets}
Though most graphics chip suppliers said that they have experienced little sales impact from integrated chipsets, the latest market share figures from Mercury Research seem to tell a different story, suggesting that integrated products indeed ate into the graphics chip market in the third quarter.
The change is probably best represented by Intel’s fast-growing market share in the overall graphics product market. The market includes desktop and notebook-use graphics chips as well as integrated chipsets. Intel’s market presence rose to 27% from 20% in the second quarter, squeezing ATI Technologies down to third place.
Although leading graphics chip designers Nvidia and ATI have tried to consolidate and expand their market presence by extending business into the integrated sector, their market shares in that sector have so far remained marginal.
Excluding integrated chipsets, Nvidia and ATI held onto their thrones in the desktop and notebook graphics chip markets, respectively. However, boosted by its slight growth in the notebook sector, Nvidia’s overall share in the graphics chip market rose to 58% from 56% in the second quarter, while ATI’s fell from 36% to 33%.
Based on the statistics, ATI seemed to be hit harder by Intel than Nvidia. However, AMI Technologies, ATI’s agent in Taiwan, said that the company’s market share is expected to climb in the fourth quarter, as shipments of its R300 and RV250 chips for orders from Dell Computer and Legend begin.
-----------------
Kind of interesting integrated chipsets ate into graphics chipsets marketshare.
Who would think integrated chipsets makes up the percentage it does?
ATI and Nvidia have being trying to get a foothold in the integrated graphics market.
So ATI dominates notebook graphics, Intel integrated graphics and Nvidia desktop graphics.
Interesting to see the impact the new Radeon lines will have.
