SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A 15-year-old Washington state boy suffered serious burns when he set himself on fire trying to re-enact a stunt similar to those from MTV's controversial show "Jackass," though an MTV spokesperson noted the stunt the boy tried had never appeared on the show or in the recent movie based on the show.

The boy from the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, Washington, soaked his shirt in rubbing alcohol late on Friday and ignited it while his friends stood by with a video camera shooting footage they planned to sell, police and local media reported.

After suffering first-degree burns over his face and upper body, the teen-ager initially told police that someone had set his clothes on fire while he walked on a trail after attending a high school football game in Issaquah, Washington, police said.

But police later recovered a backpack containing an alcohol-soaked T-shirt, lighter fluid and a video camera.

"The stunt obviously went very wrong," Issaquah police said in a statement, adding that the boy could face obstruction of justice charges for lying about the incident, requiring extra police work.

The "Jackass" show depicting outrageous and dangerous stunts by paid actors aired on Viacom Inc.'s youth-oriented MTV in 2000 and 2001 and then was canceled. However, a movie version opened in theaters three weeks ago and has raked in $53.3 million at the box office.

The movie includes the following disclaimer: "The stunts in this movie were performed by professionals, so, neither you nor your dumb buddies should attempt anything from this movie."

"We're sorry when anybody gets hurt; however, nothing like this incident described ever aired on the show or in the movie," said an MTV spokeswoman.

In 2001, "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville donned a fireproof suit covered in steaks and was set on fire to become a human barbecue. A teen-ager who tried to duplicate the stunt was hospitalized with severe burns.

Injuries allegedly tied to "Jackass" or young imitators have sparked several lawsuits against MTV and Viacom.

Last month, a California woman sued claiming she suffered spine and knee injuries when a "Jackass" cast member knocked her over after slamming himself into a lectern on a stage in a stunt filmed for a similar pilot program that never aired.

I can hear it being said to him now:

It could be that your sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

Apparently people are no longer responsible for their own stupidity. "Jackass made me do it". WTF! YOU LIT YOURSELF ON FIRE AND GOT BURNED. WOW, REALLY!?!? WTF DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN, YOU FRIGGIN MORON?? At least be a man and say "yeah, I did something stupid", instead of being a little baby and blaming it on somebody else (who, btw, was smart enough to do the stunt and NOT get injured). Now the lawyers get involved. Scum of the earth. Although you gotta wonder what kind of JURY gives X million dollars to people like the woman who dumped coffee on herself. IMHO, it's just as much a fault of society as the lawyers 'cause the juries are made up of everyday people. (rant, rant, rant....)

It is very sad that our society has degraded to the point where anybody can get away with anything as long as they can blame somebody else for it. The entire notion of PERSONAL RESPOSIBILITY is gone. It's simply disgusting. DISGUSTING. AAAAAAARGH....!

and we reward klutzes. a woman tripped over a front step where i work and she made my boss pay all her subseqent medical bills. more or less she said she could sue him for the bills and a lot more so he had better pay for her doc visits due to hurting her ankle, shoulder, etc.
she would've won, so my boss obliged quickly. wtf, she was clumbsy. the stairs are normal, code steps. watch the frig where you are walking!

not to disagree with %99 of what you are saying but i used to work for McDonalds and she rightly won the settlement. before you cover your monitor with rage-induced spittle, hear me out.

she won because the coffee was TOO hot. the department of health had previously warned the company 2 TIMES that the temperature of the coffee was too hot for public consumption and it posed a major risk to the health and welfare of their patrons. while you may rightly assume she should have expected to be burned by spilling coffee on herself, she should not have expected to burned as badly as she did. this is why she won. not because she was burned, but because she wsa burned so badly.

i agree with you on the increasing cost of products because of the skyrocketing cost of litigation. if you read studies on the costs, the average american pays hundreds of dollars/year extra to foot this bill. i work in marketing in the trucking industry and insurance bills have gone up 40-100 percent in the last few years because of frivolous lawsuits. it's ridiculous. and who pays for this? you and me.
